Meta Lays Off 8,000, Reallocates 7,000 to AI Teams; Sparks Job Security Fears

· · 3 min read

Meta has eliminated nearly 8,000 roles while shifting over 7,000 employees into AI-focused teams, sparking widespread concern among white-collar workers about job security and AI's role in automation. CEO Mark Zuckerberg sought to reassure staff, stating no further company-wide layoffs are expected this year.

Meta Platforms recently announced a significant workforce restructuring, cutting nearly 8,000 jobs, or about 10 percent of its global employee base. Concurrently, the tech giant is reallocating over 7,000 employees to artificial intelligence-focused teams, a move that has intensified the global debate over AI's potential to displace white-collar labor.

The layoffs, communicated via email around 4 AM on a Wednesday, delivered a harsh message to affected staff: “Unfortunately, your role has been eliminated as part of today’s reorganisation.” Some emails reportedly included instructions for those already in the office to gather personal items and head home, adding to the distress.

Employee Reactions Highlight AI Anxiety

The restructuring has become a flashpoint for anxieties across the tech industry, with many questioning whether AI is not just transforming work but actively replacing human roles. A viral post on X (formerly Twitter) described a Meta employee who spent months building an internal AI tool only to be laid off. The user highlighted that Meta had mandated an “AI week” for staff to familiarize themselves with AI systems and develop early-stage internal tools, with some projects moving into further development.

“For the past couple months, my wife has been working with a superior and an engineer to refine her approved project, knowing that it could ultimately be what replaces her,” the post read. “Fast forward to today: She’s canned.”

Another poignant account came from Gary Tay, a Singapore-based Meta employee who had spent nearly a decade with the company. Tay shared on LinkedIn that he was laid off just one day after training a new engineer. His post resonated widely, particularly one stark sentence: “AI is here to stay, apparently the human isn’t.” Tay, who had over 15 years in major global tech firms, indicated he would use this time to reassess his career ahead of welcoming a newborn child.

Zuckerberg Bets Big on AI Amidst Cuts

As the layoffs unfolded, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressed employees in a memo, defending the company's aggressive push into artificial intelligence. He described AI as “the most consequential technology of our lifetimes” and emphasized that companies leading in this space would define the next generation of technology.

Zuckerberg acknowledged the emotional toll of the job cuts, stating, “It’s always sad to say good-bye to people who have contributed to our mission and to building this company. I feel the weight of that.” He also attempted to calm remaining employee fears by asserting that he did not anticipate additional company-wide layoffs this year, while admitting that internal communication regarding the changes could have been better.

The mass layoffs and concurrent reallocation to AI teams underscore a significant shift in Meta’s strategic priorities and raise crucial questions about the future of employment in an increasingly automated world.
