Skoda's India Strategy: Why Sedans Remain Key Amid SUV Market Boom

· · 3 min read

Despite SUVs dominating India's passenger vehicle sales, Skoda Auto has unveiled an all-new lineup of its Slavia sedan, alongside the Octavia RS and Superb. The automaker's executives emphasize brand legacy and segment share over short-term demand trends.

In a bold move that bucks India's automotive trends, Skoda Auto has reaffirmed its commitment to the sedan segment, unveiling an all-new Slavia lineup in Mumbai. This launch, which also included the Octavia RS and Superb, comes as Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) account for a significant two-thirds of the country's passenger vehicle sales.

Skoda's Contrarian Bet on Sedans

While most global automakers have pivoted their India strategies towards utility vehicles over the past three years, Skoda is taking a different path. The new Slavia doubles down on a segment that currently holds less than 8% of the overall market share, compared to SUVs' 56% in FY26, according to automotive data.

Ashish Gupta, Skoda's Brand Director, openly acknowledged the prevailing market sentiment at the Mumbai event. "You might say this is the era of the SUV. Which is true," he stated. However, Gupta articulated a core belief underpinning Skoda's India sedan strategy: "The sedan somehow remains the definitive idea of a car. Even today, if you ask a child to draw a car, there is a high chance that it won't be an SUV or a crossover. They most probably will draw that classic three-box shape."

Klaus Zellmer, CEO of Skoda, echoed this sentiment, asserting, "In a world where SUVs often dominate the headlines, Slavia shows that a great sedan still has a strong place in the market. It strengthens our sedan legacy and our premium positioning."

Brand Legacy and Market Share

Skoda's executives framed the Slavia launch not just around current demand but also around brand history. The Slavia name itself harks back 130 years to the bicycle that marked the beginning of Skoda's business. Furthermore, Gupta highlighted the outgoing Slavia's robust performance within its niche, claiming it holds close to 30% share of its segment, positioning Skoda as a "torchbearer of the sedan segment."

India's Growing Strategic Importance for Skoda

This strategic focus on sedans also underscores India's escalating significance for Skoda Auto globally. Jahn described India as Skoda Auto's fourth-largest global market, following Germany, the Czech Republic, and the United Kingdom. He cited record 2025 sales of 72,665 units and a best-ever first half of 2026 with 38,894 units, representing an 8% growth on an already high volume base.

Skoda's retail presence in India has nearly tripled in five years, expanding to over 340 customer touch points across 190 cities. Zellmer emphasized that India is now a "strategic pillar" of Skoda's global operations, developing products, manufacturing vehicles, building engineering capabilities, and creating solutions that have an impact far beyond its borders. Jahn added that the country is evolving into a manufacturing and export hub, serving markets in ASEAN, the Middle East, GCC, and other neighboring regions.

Globally, 2025 marked Skoda's best year yet, with deliveries surpassing one million units for the first time, largely driven by SUV volume growth. However, in India, the brand is clearly committed to maintaining a strong presence in the sedan market, banking on its legacy and a distinct customer appeal.
