Indian Smartphone Buyers Demand AI as Essential, Survey Shows

· · 2 min read

An Amazon India survey reveals 82% of Indian smartphone buyers now consider AI features crucial, moving beyond traditional factors like performance and battery life. Consumers prioritize contextual assistance and generative photo editing.

A recent Amazon India survey highlights a significant shift in consumer expectations, revealing that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a luxury but a core expectation for Indian smartphone buyers. The inaugural Best in Tech Survey, conducted in July 2026 with over 40,000 respondents, indicates a maturing market where advanced capabilities are becoming standard.

AI Features Drive Purchase Decisions

The survey found that a remarkable 82% of smartphone buyers now consider AI features when making a purchase decision. Consumers are particularly interested in practical, helpful AI applications rather than just flashy gimmicks. Contextual assistance, which enables the phone to understand user activity and offer timely help—such as on-screen content search or reply suggestions—was the most sought-after AI capability, chosen by 25% of respondents.

  • Generative Photo Editing: 18% of buyers desired AI for enhancing and manipulating images.
  • Visual Search: 17% expressed interest in AI-powered visual recognition for information retrieval.
  • Adaptive Battery Management: 11% wanted AI to intelligently optimize battery life, a crucial practical benefit.

Performance and Battery Remain Paramount

Despite the growing demand for AI, fundamental smartphone attributes continue to be non-negotiable. Performance and speed were ranked highest by 87% of respondents, followed closely by battery life at 79%, and camera quality at 77%. Interestingly, battery life also emerged as the biggest pain point for current smartphone users, with 22% identifying it as a major shortcoming. Camera quality and overall performance followed at 17% and 12% respectively.

This suggests that while AI is a significant draw, it must complement robust core functionality. A phone with cutting-edge AI features but poor battery life or slow performance is unlikely to satisfy modern Indian consumers.

Willingness to Invest in Premium Experiences

The survey also highlighted a strong inclination towards mid-premium and premium smartphone segments. The ₹25,000-₹50,000 price range was the largest category, attracting 42% of respondents. Furthermore, one in three buyers expressed readiness to spend above ₹50,000 on their next device. This indicates a market willing to invest in quality and advanced features.

Upgrade cycles vary, with 48% planning to replace their phones within three months, while 54% typically keep their devices for at least two years. When it comes to making the final purchase, reviews and ratings hold significant sway, cited by 47% of buyers as more influential than discounts and price deals (35%).

These findings underscore a sophisticated Indian smartphone market where intelligent features like AI are now a fundamental expectation, alongside unwavering demand for high performance and reliability.
