iPhone Now Encrypts Android Messages: How to Enable RCS Security

· · 2 min read

Apple's iOS 26.5 update introduces end-to-end encrypted RCS chats, finally bringing secure messaging between iPhones and Android devices. This significant privacy upgrade protects conversations, ensuring they remain private during transmission.

A major privacy upgrade for iPhone users has arrived with the rollout of iOS 26.5, enabling end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) chats with Android devices. This highly anticipated feature, currently in beta, ensures that messages exchanged between supported iPhones and Android phones are protected from interception during transmission.

Previously, only iMessage conversations between Apple users benefited from end-to-end encryption. Chats between iPhone and Android users, even after Apple adopted basic RCS support, lacked this crucial layer of security. The iOS 26.5 update changes this by extending encryption to these cross-platform RCS conversations, bringing them closer to the privacy standards long available within iMessage.

Enhanced Messaging Beyond Encryption

Beyond the vital security enhancement, RCS messaging already offers several advantages over traditional SMS, improving the overall messaging experience between different mobile operating systems. These benefits include:

  • Higher-quality media sharing
  • Typing indicators
  • Read receipts
  • Improved group chat functionalities

It's important to note that the availability of encrypted RCS messaging depends on several factors, including carrier support, the specific Android device being used, and compatibility with the latest RCS standard. Therefore, not all users may see this feature immediately after updating.

How to Check and Enable Encrypted RCS Messaging on iPhone

To access this new security feature, iPhone users must first ensure their device is updated to iOS 26.5. Follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to General and tap Software Update to install the latest version.
  3. Once updated, return to Settings.
  4. Open Apps (or scroll down to find app settings).
  5. Under the Text Messaging section, tap RCS Messaging.
  6. Inside this settings page, you can verify if the “End-to-End Encryption (Beta)” option is enabled. Apple states that this feature is turned on by default for supported devices and carriers.

Checking RCS Encryption on Android Devices

Android users can also check their RCS encryption settings within the Google Messages app:

  1. Open Google Messages.
  2. Tap your profile icon.
  3. Go to Message Settings.
  4. Under RCS Chats, users can check the “Automatically resend as text” option. Google notes that users can switch to RCS chats if an encrypted message fails to send, indicating the system's attempt to use encrypted RCS by default when available.

This update, rolled out on May 12, 2026, marks a significant step towards a more unified and secure messaging ecosystem across mobile platforms.
