iPhone & Android RCS Messages Now Feature End-to-End Encryption

· · 2 min read

Apple and Google have collaborated to bring end-to-end encryption (E2EE) to Rich Communication Services (RCS) for cross-platform messaging. This crucial update significantly enhances user privacy and security for texts exchanged between iPhones and Android devices, replacing traditional SMS.

A significant privacy upgrade is rolling out for smartphone users: Apple and Google have partnered to implement end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for Rich Communication Services (RCS) messages. This update means that texts exchanged between iPhones and Android devices using RCS will now be secured, ensuring that only the sender and intended recipient can read the content.

Enhanced Privacy for Cross-Platform Messaging

For years, messages between iPhones and Android phones often defaulted to the less secure SMS (Short Message Service) protocol, lacking modern encryption. With this new collaboration, RCS messaging is set to replace traditional SMS, bringing a suite of advanced features alongside robust security.

End-to-end encryption is a critical security feature. It scrambles messages on the sender's device and only decrypts them on the receiver's device. This process makes it exceptionally difficult for third parties—including internet service providers, telecom operators, and even the platform companies themselves—to access or read user conversations.

What This Means for Users

The rollout, currently in beta, applies to iPhone users running iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android users on the latest version of Google Messages. Beyond enhanced privacy, RCS messaging offers several improvements over SMS, such as:

  • Improved media sharing capabilities
  • Typing indicators
  • Read receipts
  • Better group chat experiences
  • Support for editing and deleting sent messages
  • Tapback reactions across platforms
  • Inline replies to specific messages within chats

A Collaborative Industry Effort

Apple and Google led a cross-industry effort, working with the GSM Association (GSMA), to integrate E2EE into RCS. This upgrade is part of the RCS Universal Profile 3.0 standard, and the underlying encryption system is based on the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol. This joint initiative marks a significant step forward in securing cross-platform communication for millions of users worldwide.
