In a landmark development for India's burgeoning technology sector, the CG Semi Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, has commenced operations, with plans to export its "Made in India" semiconductors to global markets. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the facility, hailing it as a crucial stride towards establishing India as a global hub for semiconductors and advanced technologies.
Global Reach for Indian-Made Chips
Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that chips manufactured at the Sanand plant will serve diverse applications, including automobiles, scooters, and various industrial uses. Critically, these domestically produced semiconductors are slated for export to key international markets such as Japan, the United States, and Europe, signaling India's growing capability in the high-tech manufacturing landscape.
Minister Vaishnaw attributed this significant achievement to the Prime Minister's dedicated efforts to cultivate a robust domestic semiconductor ecosystem. He emphasized that what was once deemed an impossible feat has now become a reality, thanks to a strong commitment to building a semiconductor industry within India.
Sanand: An Emerging Semiconductor Cluster
During the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi highlighted Sanand's rapid emergence as a vital semiconductor cluster. He drew parallels with established global technology hubs like Silicon Valley and Taiwan's Hsinchu Science Park, emphasizing that industrial leadership is fostered through clusters rather than isolated factories.
The Prime Minister noted that within a short span, multiple prominent companies, including Micron, Kaynes, and CG Semi, have initiated production in Sanand. He articulated a vision for an expanding ecosystem that would encompass specialized companies, chemical manufacturing, testing laboratories, machine servicing industries, design centers, and startups. Modi underscored the profound economic impact of such clusters, stating that one industry can spawn hundreds, creating millions of jobs and transforming an entire region's economy, with similar clusters developing across the nation.
