Vedanta Power Limited, a prominent power producer, has announced its highest-ever quarterly power sales for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027. The Anil Agarwal-led company recorded sales of 5,593 million units (MU) of electricity in Q2 FY27, marking a substantial 26% increase compared to the same period last year.
For the first half of FY27, Vedanta Power's sales surged by 32% year-on-year, reaching an impressive 10,817 MU. This significant growth is attributed to stronger plant availability and higher utilization rates across its key generating assets.
Key Plants Drive Performance
The stellar performance was primarily fueled by strong contributions from Meenakshi Energy and the Jharsuguda Thermal Plant, while Talwandi Sabo continued to provide a stable base for the company's portfolio.
- Meenakshi Energy: This plant saw a remarkable 111% year-on-year increase in Q2 sales, reaching 1,470 MU. Its H1 sales climbed by an even more impressive 160% to 2,820 MU, reflecting the impact of its expanded 1,000 MW capacity base.
- Jharsuguda Thermal Plant: The Jharsuguda facility reported a sharp turnaround, with Q2 power sales skyrocketing by 186% year-on-year to 873 MU. Its H1 sales increased by 59% to 1,559 MU. The plant's Plant Availability Factor (PAF) significantly improved to 98% in Q2, up from 43% in the corresponding period last year, enabling it to generate and sell substantially more electricity.
- Talwandi Sabo: Maintaining consistent performance, Talwandi Sabo recorded a 6% rise in Q2 sales to 2,945 MU, with H1 sales growing 3% to 5,668 MU. The plant achieved an 86% availability in H1 FY27, exceeding the 80% normative availability stipulated in its power purchase agreement with the Punjab government.
Accelerated Capacity Expansion and Strategic Outlook
Vedanta Power currently operates approximately 5 GW of generation capacity and plans to add around 600 MW by the end of FY27. The company has ambitious long-term targets, aiming for 12 GW by FY33, nearly tripling its operational base from FY26, with an ultimate goal of reaching 20 GW. This expansion strategy is supported by rising electricity demand across various sectors, including manufacturing, infrastructure, and data centers.
The company's operational assets include Talwandi Sabo, Sakti Thermal Power Plant, Meenakshi Energy, and Jharsuguda Thermal Power Plant. Approximately 85% of its capacity is backed by long-term domestic coal linkages, ensuring greater visibility over fuel availability.
Market Recognition and Sustainability Efforts
Following its recent listing after demerger from Vedanta, the company was included in key indices such as the Nifty 500, Nifty Smallcap 250, Nifty MidSmallcap 400, and Nifty Smallcap 500 from September 30.
Vedanta Power is also actively pursuing sustainability initiatives. This includes biomass co-firing at its Talwandi Sabo plant, where biomass now accounts for over 5% of fuel consumption. The company has set clear targets for reducing greenhouse gas intensity and improving water efficiency, with an overarching objective of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 or earlier.
