Agentic AI: Actions on Your Behalf
The introduction of agentic AI allows Google Maps to perform actions based on natural language prompts. Previously limited to just finding nearby restaurants, "Ask Maps" can now facilitate direct food orders. Users can issue commands like, "Where can I order vegan avocado toast and an oat milk latte near home?" The system identifies suitable restaurants and, upon user confirmation, directs them to partner services such as Square, Toast, or Uber Eats to complete the order and payment.
Beyond food, this agentic functionality extends to booking accommodations and purchasing event tickets. Users can discover hotels or local events like concerts and comedy shows, with Google Maps providing direct links to partnered booking or ticketing platforms.
These agentic features are currently rolling out to users within the United States.
Personal Intelligence: Tailored Recommendations
Google Maps is also enhancing personalization through "Personal Intelligence," a feature that leverages information from a user's Gmail and Google Calendar. When opted in, this allows "Ask Maps" to understand travel plans, existing bookings, and scheduled events, offering highly relevant recommendations.
For instance, a user could ask, "Can you recommend where to eat and what to do near my hotel?" and receive suggestions informed by their itinerary. The system can also recall previous conversations for a more seamless and continuous interaction. Google emphasizes user privacy, with Personal Intelligence turned off by default; users must explicitly opt in to grant access to their Gmail and Calendar data for these enhanced responses.
Personal Intelligence is expanding to users in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, and Mexico, alongside over 150 other countries and territories, with support for English language queries.
Real-time Updates and Future Outlook
In addition to these AI advancements, Google Maps is incorporating more robust real-time transit information. This includes current traffic conditions, road closures, construction alerts, and accident reports.
