Indian equity markets experienced a notable rally on Monday, with the benchmark Sensex climbing 564.03 points, or 0.76 percent, to settle at 74,858.99. Concurrently, the NSE Nifty50 index gained 67.90 points, or 0.29 percent, closing at 23,414.30. This upward movement provided a much-needed boost to investor sentiment, primarily attributed to easing crude oil prices and declining bond yields.
Key Drivers Behind the Market Advance
The market's positive momentum was largely fueled by several factors. Moderating crude oil prices, with Brent crude slipping below $101 per barrel, played a significant role in alleviating inflationary concerns. This, combined with a reduction in global bond yields, created a more favorable investment environment. Additionally, analysts pointed to some bargain buying after a recent six-week correction in the markets.
Among the top performers on the Nifty, shares of Eternal Ltd, HCL Technologies Ltd, ITC Ltd, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, and Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) saw gains of up to 2.77 percent.
Expert Perspectives on Market Sustainability
Despite the day's gains, market experts urged caution due to persistent geopolitical uncertainties and the potential for renewed US-Iran tensions. Ajit Mishra, SVP (Research) at Religare Broking, highlighted that while easing crude and bargain buying supported sentiment, the recovery remained measured due to elevated global yields and ongoing geopolitical concerns. He noted that realty, pharma, and FMCG sectors performed well, while metals and IT saw some profit-taking.
Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, emphasized that the durability of this recovery would hinge on sustained stability in crude oil prices and greater clarity on the geopolitical front. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, added that improving sentiment ahead of US-China talks and renewed hopes of diplomatic engagement between the US and Iran at the UN also contributed to the positive mood. Nair believes the earnings cycle appears to be turning positive, coupled with attractive valuations in certain market segments, supporting a constructive medium-term outlook for equities.
Nifty Outlook and Resistance Levels
Looking ahead, Nagaraj Shetti, Senior Technical Research Analyst at HDFC Securities, identified the next significant resistance level for the Nifty around 23,600. He suggested that any potential weakness from current levels could find support around the 23,200 mark during the week. Investors are advised to monitor geopolitical developments and interest-rate expectations, which remain key variables influencing market direction in the near term.
