OpenAI is significantly upgrading and expanding ChatGPT's memory capabilities, introducing a more personalized AI experience for a wider audience. For the first time, this advanced memory feature, which allows ChatGPT to recall details from past conversations, is being rolled out to free-tier users, alongside enhancements for paid subscribers.
How ChatGPT's Memory Works
The core of this enhanced memory system is built upon OpenAI's “dreaming” architecture, which intelligently identifies and stores relevant information from previous interactions. This allows ChatGPT to provide more contextually aware and tailored responses, making conversations feel more natural and continuous.
Users will gain greater control over what ChatGPT remembers. A new Memory Summary page enables users to review the information ChatGPT has learned about them. From this page, individuals can update specific details or even provide new information to guide the AI's understanding. ChatGPT's memory operates on three key principles: it remembers useful information, respects user preferences and personal rules, and maintains relevancy across interactions.
Rollout Details and Availability
The upgraded memory feature is initially rolling out to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users in the United States, who will also benefit from a doubled capacity for memory storage. Importantly, OpenAI has confirmed that the feature will also become available to free users “over the coming weeks.”
This expansion to the free tier was made possible by significant technological advancements. OpenAI states that recent improvements have reduced the computational resources required to power the “dreaming” system for free users by approximately fivefold. This efficiency gain ensures that both free and subscription users will enjoy a largely similar and highly personalized ChatGPT experience.
