The Indian Highway Ministry has greenlit a significant infrastructure project, approving ₹2,077.18 crore for the four-laning of a 31.2-kilometre section of National Highway-327. This crucial stretch connects Bagdogra, Panitanki, Kharibari, and Galgalia within West Bengal's Darjeeling district. Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced the approval, highlighting its strategic importance.
Boosting North Bengal's Connectivity
This substantial investment is poised to dramatically improve road infrastructure across North Bengal. The enhanced connectivity along the Siliguri Corridor, often referred to as the 'Chicken's Neck,' is particularly vital as it serves as a critical link between mainland India and the northeastern states.
According to Minister Gadkari, the project's scope extends beyond simple road widening. It includes:
- Construction of three major bridges.
- One Road Over Bridge (ROB).
- Five dedicated elephant underpasses.
- Service roads on both sides of the highway.
Focus on Safety and Wildlife Protection
A key aspect of the NH-327 upgrade is its dual focus on improving traffic flow and ensuring safety for both human commuters and local wildlife. The inclusion of five elephant underpasses is a significant measure, particularly in North Bengal where human-wildlife conflicts, often involving elephants crossing highways, have been a growing concern. These dedicated crossings aim to facilitate safer movement for wildlife, thereby reducing the risk of accidents involving vehicles.
“The project will include the construction of 3 major bridges, 1 Road Over Bridge (ROB), 5 elephant underpasses and service roads on both sides, strengthening connectivity while ensuring safer movement for both people and wildlife,” Minister Nitin Gadkari shared in an online post.
Economic and Strategic Advantages
The four-laning of NH-327 is expected to alleviate congestion on the existing highway, significantly improving access to key regional hubs such as Bagdogra Airport, Naxalbari, Kharibari, and Panitanki. This improved infrastructure will facilitate faster movement of both passengers and goods, providing a substantial boost to the local economy.

North Bengal is a major producer of tea, agricultural, and horticultural products.
