Leading cryptocurrency exchange Binance has confirmed that ten major digital assets held on its platform are now fully backed at a minimum 1:1 ratio. This announcement follows a security incident that led to the theft of crypto assets, prompting increased transparency measures.
Users holding Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), USDT, BNB, Solana (SOL), USDC, XRP, USD1, RLUSD, and Zcash (ZEC) will be able to independently verify their holdings. This verification is facilitated through Binance's Proof of Reserves (PoR) system, once the latest verification proof is fully generated.
Understanding Proof of Reserves
Proof of Reserves (PoR) is a mechanism designed to allow cryptocurrency exchanges to demonstrate that they hold assets corresponding to customer balances. Its primary objective is to empower users to confirm that their assets are genuinely backed, rather than relying solely on the exchange's assurances.
A 1:1 backing ratio signifies that the exchange maintains reserves equivalent to at least the total customer assets it is obligated to cover. Binance states that the ten cryptocurrencies listed in its recent update meet this critical threshold.
How Users Can Verify Their Holdings
Binance released a fresh PoR snapshot at 00:00 UTC on October 31, updating the information available on its PoR website. While this snapshot offers a current view of the exchange's accounted assets, the complete zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) requires significant computational time.
The exchange estimates that the full ZKP will take approximately 40-50 hours to generate, becoming available by November 3. Once available, users will be able to utilize this comprehensive proof to independently check the backing of their individual holdings.
Important Considerations for Investors
While Proof of Reserves enhances visibility into an exchange's reported asset backing, it should not be considered an absolute guarantee against all potential risks. A reserve snapshot provides information valid only at a specific point in time; it does not inherently protect against future security breaches, operational disruptions, or other financial hazards.
Binance has stated its commitment to absorbing the financial impact of the stolen assets, ensuring that losses are not passed on to users. The exchange has already replenished 90% of the affected amount and is actively acquiring the remaining less-liquid tokens via market and over-the-counter channels.
For investors, checking Proof of Reserves is one crucial component in assessing an exchange's transparency. However, it remains equally vital to understand an exchange's custody arrangements, overall security practices, and withdrawal access policies to make informed decisions.
