India is gearing up for its biggest festive shopping season, and Amazon India is teasing its highly anticipated Great Indian Festival 2026 sale. Zeba Khan, Director of Consumer Electronics at Amazon India, warns that the deals and pricing during this period could present a unique "now or never" opportunity for shoppers.
Unprecedented Market Challenges
The consumer electronics industry faces significant headwinds in 2026, marked by global chip shortages and a sharp increase in component costs. Khan described this year as unlike any the industry has seen, with memory component prices reportedly surging up to 300% since September 2025. This pressure has led major brands like Apple, Samsung, and Oppo to pass on price increases to customers.
According to TrendForce data, DRAM contract prices soared 90-95% quarter-on-quarter in Q1 2026, with NAND flash climbing 55-60%. LPDDR memory also saw a roughly 90% increase in the same period, marking the steepest jump recorded in the category. IDC reports that DRAM and NAND supply growth in 2026 will remain below historical norms, indicating continued constrained availability until at least the second half of 2027.
Why "Now or Never"?
Despite these challenges, Khan emphasizes that Amazon's Great Indian Festival will deliver maximum value and accessibility. She stated that consumers should view the upcoming discounts, deals, and financing options as the most attractive prices they will encounter for electronics in 2026. "It's literally now or never for upgrades," Khan reiterated, suggesting that buyers are aware that these festive prices will likely be the year's best.
Consumer Trends: Premiumization and Financing
Even with rising prices, Indian consumers are not cutting back. Khan noted a strong trend towards premium and informed purchases. High-value categories such as large appliances (55-inch and above TVs) and flagship smartphones are experiencing exponential growth across metros and even Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
Amid price uncertainties, financing options are playing a crucial role. During Prime Day, one out of five smartphone customers utilized EMI, with four out of those five opting for no-cost EMI. A Counterpoint study projects that EMI and financing options will account for 42% of India's smartphone sales this year, as consumers spread out the cost of significant upgrades.
Expanding Categories Beyond Core Devices
Beyond traditional phones and laptops, Khan highlighted the rapid growth of new categories. Wearables, smart glasses, smart rings, and health-and-wellness devices are quickly gaining traction. Amazon has become India's largest online retailer for smart glasses, demonstrating an "overwhelming response" despite their premium price tags. The focus in health and wellness has shifted from basic step tracking to comprehensive health monitoring, with brands like Whoop and Apple Watch driving this change.
What to Expect from the Great Indian Festival 2026
While specific bank tie-ups, cashback structures, and EMI tenures remain under wraps, Khan teased that shoppers can anticipate "the best bank discount structures, the best EMI tenures, no-cost EMI, pay later" once the sale is officially announced. Consumers are advised to await the formal unveilings for full details on the upcoming festive sale.
