Amazon announced on Wednesday, October 29, 2026, a reduction of approximately 250 jobs within its devices and services division. This latest round of Amazon AI job cuts predominantly affects software development engineers and comes amidst a broader strategic shift within the tech giant.
Restructuring for Efficiency and AI Adoption
A company spokesperson confirmed the difficult decision, stating that the layoffs aim to help Amazon “operate more efficiently and better align with our product roadmap.” This restructuring follows a “thorough review of our structure,” according to Cherie Robinson, a human resources vice president in the devices and services unit. Employees were reportedly notified of their termination via text messages and emails sent early Wednesday morning.
The job cuts occur just weeks after Amazon unveiled new Kindle e-readers and tablet computers, and notably, a day after the company released updated internal guidelines for its Software Development Engineers (SDEs). This memo, originally from September but publicized recently, strongly encouraged engineers to leverage artificial intelligence to solve customer problems rather than focusing on metrics like token consumption or AI adoption rates, which do not necessarily equate to productivity.
The Mandate to Embrace AI
“We all need to embrace this change and take the time to learn, or we risk being left behind,” the internal memo stated. It cautioned against practices that could increase costs and complexity without tangible benefits, emphasizing the need for practical AI application.
This directive underscores Amazon's push for its workforce to integrate AI more effectively into product development, signaling a potential shift in skill requirements for its engineering teams.
Continued Workforce Adjustments
These 250 job eliminations are the latest in a series of significant workforce reductions at Amazon. Earlier this month, the company laid off 1,000 employees, primarily within its Stores unit, which manages the core e-commerce platform. These previous cuts coincided with Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days. The current layoffs also add to the approximately 30,000 jobs Amazon has eliminated since the end of last year, a period of ongoing strategic realignment for the technology behemoth.
