At a recent IPO press conference, Akash Ambani, a key figure at Reliance Jio, unveiled the company's ambitious roadmap for its next phase of technological growth. The plans include a significant push into next-generation connectivity, with a focus on 6G transition through software upgrades, ultra-fast fixed wireless broadband, and a strategic expansion of its network technology business into global markets.
Accelerating Broadband with 5Gbps Speeds
Jio is making strides in fixed wireless broadband, aiming for significantly faster speeds. Ambani highlighted the company's proprietary UBR technology, which utilizes the 5G unlicensed (Wi-Fi) band. This innovation is designed to expand connectivity to homes.
Currently, approximately 6.5 million customers are leveraging this technology, contributing to 40% of Jio's new subscriber additions. The next generation of this technology, demonstrated earlier this year, is projected to deliver download speeds of up to 5Gbps and upload speeds of up to 1Gbps. These speeds represent the stated technical capabilities of the new system.
Beyond raw speed, Jio envisions an integrated home experience, combining broadband, television services, and various digital applications, positioning this as a major growth avenue.
Jio's Software-Driven 6G Transition Ambitions
Looking ahead, Jio's network aspirations extend to the deployment of 6G. The company is exploring a strategy that emphasizes software upgrades to evolve its network capabilities, rather than solely relying on entirely new physical infrastructure. This approach focuses on how software can adapt and enhance existing networks as the telecommunications industry prepares for the next generation of mobile connectivity standards.
However, it is important to note that while software will play a crucial role, a complete 6G transition may still require new equipment, depending on the capabilities of current hardware and the technical demands of future commercial 6G standards.
Global Expansion and Technology Partnerships
Jio intends to expand its reach beyond India by partnering with telecom operators worldwide. Ambani outlined a strategy to offer Jio's comprehensive, end-to-end technology stack as a managed service, distinguishing itself from being merely a vendor or software provider.
The company boasts a robust technology base, having filed over 7,220 patents and employing more than 12,000 engineers. Its technological expertise spans areas such as autonomous networks, home platforms, devices, operating systems, and digital applications.
Jio plans to carefully select international partners based on market opportunities, aiming to foster business growth and monetize its extensive technology capabilities. The company sees significant potential in both developed and developing markets, leveraging its experience in deploying and operating large-scale networks in India.
