Union Opposition Mounts Against IDBI Bank Sale
Banking and insurance employee unions have strongly opposed the Union Cabinet's recent approval to sell a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank to Fairfax Financial Holdings. This decision has ignited significant resistance from various labor organizations, including the United Forum of IDBI Bank Officers and Employees, who immediately called for a review of the proposed sale.
Concerns Over 'Privatization' and 'Foreignization'
The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), representing a substantial portion of the banking workforce, has labeled the move as not merely 'privatization' but 'foreignization.' The UFBU has instructed its members to wear black badges on October 16 as a mark of protest against the sale. In a statement, the forum criticized the government, stating, "Government talks about Atmanirbhar but this important bank with huge public savings is being sold to a foreign investor. This is totally unwarranted and undesirable."
Similarly, the All-India Insurance Employees Association (AIIEA) has condemned the decision, emphasizing IDBI Bank's consistent profitability and notable improvements in its financial and operational performance.
Government's Broken Assurances
Both the UFBU and the AIIEA have highlighted that the government had previously assured Parliament it would maintain at least a 51% equity stake in IDBI Bank. The proposed strategic restructuring involves Fairfax Financial Holdings acquiring a 60.72% stake, which includes the Government of India's 30.48% equity shareholding and the 30.42% stake held by the Life Insurance Corporation of India.
Official Reassurances to Employees
Despite union concerns, government officials have attempted to reassure IDBI Bank employees, stating that they need not worry about the change in management. Officials noted that the government and LIC would collectively retain a combined stake of more than 30% in the lender. They also clarified that IDBI Bank operates as a board-managed entity, distinguishing it from a traditional public sector bank. "Over the last one year, there have been continuous discussions with IDBI stakeholders and concerns of every group have been addressed," officials added.
