Mumbai, India — Actress Mahima Makwana, known for her roles in projects like 'Musafir Cafe' and 'Antim', has shared her inspiring journey from growing up in a Mumbai chawl to becoming a homeowner twice over by the age of 26. Makwana's story highlights her dedication to her family, particularly her mother's dream of owning a home.
Makwana's father passed away when she was just five months old, leaving her mother to raise two children. Reflecting on her early life, she recounted how her mother, who harbored her own unfulfilled acting aspirations, encouraged young Mahima to pursue acting as a means of financial support for the family.
Early Struggles and Breakthrough
Despite initially having little interest in acting, Mahima began auditioning at the age of nine. Her childhood was far from typical; she juggled school with demanding audition schedules, often feeling exhausted. The family's financial hardship and the desire to support her mother were her primary motivations.
A pivotal moment came when her mother expressed a deep wish to own a house. This conversation became Mahima's strongest drive. Her breakthrough arrived in 2012 with the Zee TV show 'Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke' when she was just 13. The show's success dramatically improved her family's financial situation.
“After that show, I bought my first home. I was just 14. I bought a house in Mira Road and also bought my first car,” Makwana revealed, highlighting the rapid transformation in her life.
Overcoming Rejection and Typecasting
While television brought her recognition, Mahima faced numerous rejections when attempting to transition into films and OTT projects. She often studied on sets, missing out on a conventional school experience. Despite years of hard work, she was frequently typecast as 'just a television actor'.
A particularly humiliating incident during a 'Balika Vadhu' shoot, where a director questioned her acting ability, fueled her determination. “I felt humiliated. I went home, memorised my lines and worked harder. It became a learning experience,” she stated.
A Turning Point with Salman Khan
Makwana's career took a significant turn after she met superstar Salman Khan while promoting a television show. A year later, she received an offer from Salman Khan Films for the movie 'Antim' (2021), a role that marked her foray into the big screen. This opportunity came during a challenging period for her family, including her brother's battle with COVID.
Following 'Antim', Mahima observed a shift in how people perceived her. “When I did Antim, people’s behaviour suddenly changed. They all wanted to become my best friend,” she said, noting that what appeared as 'overnight success' was, for her, over a decade of relentless effort and perseverance.
Fulfilling Dreams, Acknowledging Loss
More than a decade after her first property purchase, Makwana achieved another milestone last year by acquiring a second, larger home in Mumbai, where she now lives with her mother. This accomplishment stands as a testament to her dedication to fulfilling her mother's dream.
Despite her professional triumphs and financial security, Mahima candidly shared a personal void: the absence of her father. “I don’t know what it feels like to have a father. When I see my friends with their dads, I don’t know what to feel. I feel empty and heavy at the same time,” she expressed, acknowledging the lasting impact of his early passing.
