The controversial film 'Satluj', starring Diljit Dosanjh as Sikh activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, has been removed from the ZEE5 streaming platform in India, just two days after its digital release. The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) confirmed that the film was made available without completing the mandatory certification process required for theatrical release.
Ministry Cites Violation of IT Rules
According to ministry officials, 'Satluj' lacked the necessary certification for a theatrical release. Instead of complying with the certification process, the filmmakers allegedly changed the film's title from 'Punjab '95' and proceeded with its release on the OTT platform. Officials claim this action violated provisions of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
The I&B Ministry also stated that the certification body had recommended nearly 100 cuts to the film, which filmmakers reportedly chose not to implement. Furthermore, the ministry confirmed it had not received any representation from the filmmakers seeking approval or reconsideration of these recommendations prior to the film's release.
ZEE5 Confirms Removal, Explores Legal Options
Following intervention from the government, ZEE5 issued a statement confirming that 'Satluj' has been removed from its India catalogue until further notice. The streaming platform indicated it is currently exploring legal options regarding the matter.
About the Film 'Satluj'
The film, which stars Diljit Dosanjh, is based on the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a human rights activist who investigated the alleged illegal cremation of unidentified bodies in Punjab during the militancy era. The project had reportedly faced prolonged certification hurdles for over three years before its recent, brief digital release.
