Despite Bollywood delivering major box office hits, a recent survey by The Top India highlights a severe financial crisis impacting thousands of behind-the-scenes workers. The report indicates a drastic 50-60% decline in income for many professionals compared to previous years, largely due to tighter production budgets, cautious spending by OTT platforms, and delays in project approvals.
Financial Strain Hits Diverse Roles
The income reduction affects a wide range of essential personnel, from assistant directors, makeup artists, and character actors to lightmen, camera operators, production assistants, and spot staff. Even gym trainers associated with actors are feeling the pinch. Beyond individuals, equipment suppliers, transport providers, and camera rental companies are also suffering from the reduced volume of new productions.
Bollywood's prevalent freelance system means most workers are paid on a project-by-project basis without fixed salaries. This structure makes them highly vulnerable; even minor delays in film, web series, or advertisement shoots can significantly disrupt the income of hundreds of workers. Many report that projects have become less frequent, and available work often comes with lower pay rates than before, disproportionately affecting mid-level and junior professionals.
High Living Costs Exacerbate Mumbai's Pressure
Industry insiders suggest that production houses have become more conservative with their spending, while streaming platforms are taking longer to greenlight new projects. Although this slowdown is a nationwide issue, workers in Mumbai's film industry are reportedly facing the greatest pressure due to the city’s notoriously high cost of living. Key production houses, studios, and casting offices are concentrated in areas like Andheri, Juhu, and Bandra, compelling many workers to reside nearby despite exorbitant rents. Small apartments in these areas can easily exceed ₹50,000 per month, making survival extremely difficult for those with irregular and dwindling incomes.
Coping Mechanisms and Exodus from the City
To manage their expenses, many Bollywood behind-the-scenes workers are resorting to using up their life savings or borrowing money from friends and family. Some have taken on temporary jobs outside the industry, while others, unable to find stable work, have made the difficult decision to leave Mumbai and return to their hometowns. The survey, based on conversations with over 1,000 industry professionals, paints a stark picture of a workforce struggling to stay afloat amidst the industry's economic shifts.
