Bobby Deol Quits Alcohol, Inspired by Dharmendra's Struggle & Stronger Family Bonds

· · 2 min read

Actor Bobby Deol has revealed his decision to quit alcohol, citing his father Dharmendra's past struggles as a major influence. His newfound sobriety has significantly improved his relationships with his family, including half-sisters Esha and Ahana Deol.

Bollywood actor Bobby Deol recently shared a profound personal change: his decision to completely give up alcohol a year and a half ago. Deol admitted the transition was surprisingly easier than he expected, transforming both his personal health and family dynamics.

Dharmendra's Influence on Bobby Deol's Sobriety

A significant factor in Deol's choice was witnessing his father, legendary actor Dharmendra, grapple with similar issues. "I've seen what it can do," Deol stated, emphasizing his desire to avoid a similar path. This observation served as a powerful motivator for his own sobriety journey.

Deol, who previously spoke about a creeping dependency, acknowledged the professional and personal necessity of the change. "For an actor, your body, your face, are the commodities that you're selling. I cannot afford to mess with that," he told Esquire India. He also noted the increasing need for self-care as he ages.

Improved Family Relationships and Presence

Beyond personal health, Bobby Deol highlighted the positive impact of sobriety on his family life. "It's improved my relationship with my family more than anything," he explained, stressing that he is now more present for his sons and at the dinner table in everyday moments.

The actor also shared that grief, particularly in relation to his father, has brought him closer to his half-sisters, Esha Deol and Ahana Deol. He reflected on how shared loss, despite individual processing, eventually fosters stronger family bonds. "Loss has its own way of bringing a family closer," Deol observed.

A New Era of Professionalism

Deol also touched upon the evolution of the film industry, noting a shift towards greater professionalism since the 1990s. He emphasized that the high costs of production today mean there is little tolerance for unprofessional behavior or tantrums. He expressed empathy for actors who still exhibit such conduct, predicting it ultimately leads to isolation.

In a poignant moment, Deol recalled his father's subtle acknowledgment of his and brother Sunny's renewed success later in Dharmendra's life. After one of Deol's releases, Dharmendra conveyed his pride with a simple yet profound statement: "Ab tu khud ko pehchaan gaya" (Now you have recognized yourself). For Bobby, this was more meaningful than any applause, signifying a father's deep recognition.
