Nyrika Holkar, Executive Director of Godrej Enterprises Group, outlines her vision for leveraging technology and AI to modernize the conglomerate's diverse businesses. She emphasizes transitioning from intuition to data-driven insights to meet evolving consumer aspirations.

Mumbai, India – Nyrika Holkar, Executive Director of the Godrej Enterprises Group, is spearheading a transformative journey to integrate advanced technology and artificial intelligence across the conglomerate’s vast portfolio. In a recent interview, Holkar detailed her strategic approach to making the 129-year-old group future-ready, balancing its rich legacy with the demands of a dynamic business environment.

Balancing Legacy with Modern Demands

Godrej Enterprises Group manages a wide array of businesses, from consumer appliances and furniture to aerospace, advanced engineering, and real estate. Holkar acknowledges the inherent trust associated with the Godrej brand but stresses the need for continuous renewal to resonate with younger consumers. “Nobody will choose us for nostalgia,” she remarked, highlighting the imperative to deliver on contemporary aspirations through design-forward and tech-enabled offerings.

For consumer businesses, this means focusing on design and technology to enhance value propositions, as exemplified by the communication around durable steel kitchens. In industrial segments, while quality and trust remain paramount, design differentiation is achieved by evolving from traditional build-to-print models to build-to-spec capabilities, integrating software and electronics with mechanical fabrication.

AI at the Core of Innovation

Technology, particularly AI, is central to Holkar’s strategy. The group has developed an internal AI platform, Amethyst, to distill insights rapidly. This platform helps Godrej understand design trends from diverse sectors like automotive, OTT, and hospitality, applying these learnings to home furniture and décor. This shift allows teams to operate on scalable insights rather than solely on intuition.

“The Godrej brand enjoys tremendous trust. If we look at today’s younger consumers, we need to understand they are choosing us because we are a brand that delivers on their aspirations.” – Nyrika Holkar, Executive Director, Godrej Enterprises Group

Holkar champions a culture of disciplined experimentation, where learnings from both successes and failures are institutionalized. She emphasizes fostering an environment where ideas from all levels of the organization are valued, promoting active learning projects and cross-functional collaboration. This diversity of perspectives, she believes, helps challenge assumptions and leads to more holistic outcomes.

Cross-Learning and Future Ventures

The diversified nature of Godrej’s businesses is seen as a significant strength, enabling cross-learnings. For instance, material exploration insights from aerospace applications can inform appliance component development. This cross-deployment of knowledge across manufacturing, go-to-market strategies, and product development creates synergistic advantages.

Looking ahead, Godrej is also exploring new ventures through strategic adjacencies and “blue-sky thinking.” An example is leveraging its strong distribution network for locks to enter the architectural hardware market. Furthermore, the group is investing in innovative energy storage solutions, incubating a business focused on earth-abundant battery chemistry for large-scale industrial use cases. This initiative aligns with India's future energy needs, aiming to provide critical capabilities and patient capital to bring these innovations to market.
