Bollywood actor Aamir Khan addressed the common misconception that his '3 Idiots' character, Phunsukh Wangdu, was inspired by activist Sonam Wangchuk. Khan also expressed concern for Wangchuk's health amidst his ongoing hunger strike.

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has publicly clarified that his iconic character, Phunsukh Wangdu, from the 2009 blockbuster film 3 Idiots, was not based on the renowned educator and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk. Khan's statement comes amidst Wangchuk's indefinite hunger strike, during which the actor also voiced his concern for the activist's deteriorating health.

Addressing the Long-Standing Misconception

For years, many viewers have drawn parallels between the innovative and unconventional educational approach of Phunsukh Wangdu in the film and Sonam Wangchuk's real-life work, particularly his educational initiatives in Ladakh. However, Aamir Khan firmly debunked this popular belief.

“Phunsukh Wangdu wasn't based on Sonam Wangchuk. That's a misconception,” Khan stated. He emphasized that the film's creators were unaware of Wangchuk's work during the movie's production. Khan added that Wangchuk’s significant contributions to society stand on their own merit and do not require validation through a film character. “He doesn't have to be based on the character for us to respect him. What he has been doing is good work in any case,” the actor affirmed.

Concern for Sonam Wangchuk's Health

Beyond clarifying the film's inspiration, Aamir Khan also expressed deep concern regarding Sonam Wangchuk’s ongoing hunger strike. Wangchuk has been on an indefinite fast at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, pressing for various demands, and has garnered support from numerous public figures and activists.

“All of us are very concerned about his health. I hope he ends his fast soon,” Khan said, highlighting the activist's well-being as a top priority. Reports indicate increasing worries about Wangchuk's physical condition as his protest continues.

Wangchuk's Impact Beyond the Screen

Despite the film's fictional origins, Sonam Wangchuk has frequently been nicknamed the “real-life Phunsukh Wangdu” due to his pioneering efforts in education and environmental conservation. Both Wangchuk and Aamir Khan have previously addressed this perception, reiterating that while Wangchuk's work is inspiring, it was not the direct source material for the film's character.

Aamir Khan concluded by underscoring that Wangchuk’s achievements and commitment to environmental and educational causes deserve widespread recognition, irrespective of any cinematic connections.
