Indian sugar stocks experienced a notable surge in Monday's trading session, defying a broader weak trend in the domestic benchmark indices. Leading the gains were companies such as Balrampur Chini Mills Ltd, Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar Ltd, Shree Renuka Sugars Ltd, and Uttam Sugar Mills Ltd.
Government Caps Bulk Sugar Holdings
The primary catalyst for this upward movement is a new government directive restricting the inventory of sugar for bulk consumers. Effective September 1, 2026, industries including bakeries, beverage manufacturers, and food processing companies will be limited to holding a maximum of 15 days' worth of sugar requirements.
This measure comes amid growing concerns over the availability of the 2026-27 sugarcane crop. Unreliable monsoon rainfall in several key sugar-producing regions has raised anxieties about potential cane shortages and reduced overall crop output.
Market Dynamics and Other Factors
Beyond the government's inventory restrictions, several other factors are contributing to the firming of sugar prices and investor interest in the sector:
- Strong Sugar Prices: Demand for sugar remains robust, particularly with the approaching festive season in India, which typically begins in September. This increased demand provides a strong floor for prices.
- Ethanol Blending: The ongoing emphasis on ethanol blending also plays a crucial role. Sugar mills have the flexibility to divert sugarcane-based products towards ethanol production, which can impact the quantity of cane available for traditional sugar manufacturing.
On Monday, Balrampur Chini Mills shares climbed 12.68 percent to Rs 738, while Bajaj Hindusthan Sugar gained 6.59 percent to Rs 23.11. Uttam Sugar Mills rose 6.46 percent to Rs 318.80, and Shree Renuka Sugars traded 7.14 percent higher at Rs 25.80.
The broader Indian equity markets, however, were trading lower on Monday. Renewed tensions between the US and Iran pushed Brent crude oil prices above $90 a barrel, while indications of a potential US Federal Reserve rate hike added to investor apprehension, creating a contrasting backdrop for the sugar sector's performance.
