· · 3 min read

Uday Ruddarraju has been named OpenAI's Chief Technology Officer for Compute, tasked with building the massive infrastructure required to train and run advanced AI models. His extensive background in cloud and financial tech infrastructure will be crucial for scaling OpenAI's ambitions.

OpenAI has announced the appointment of Uday Ruddarraju as its new Chief Technology Officer for Compute. In this critical role, Ruddarraju will oversee the development and expansion of the advanced computing infrastructure essential for training and deploying OpenAI's cutting-edge artificial intelligence models.

Ruddarraju brings a wealth of experience in building and scaling complex technological systems across various high-growth companies. His career journey highlights a consistent focus on the underlying hardware, engineering systems, and data center infrastructure that power modern digital platforms.

A Career Dedicated to Infrastructure at Scale

An alumnus of Hyderabad’s Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology and the University of Minnesota, Ruddarraju began his professional career with internships, including a stint at Amazon. He then spent over five years at eBay, where he honed his skills in cloud infrastructure and platform engineering. His tenure at eBay saw him progress through key engineering roles, laying the groundwork for his future leadership positions.

Following his time at eBay, Ruddarraju moved to Robinhood, a prominent fintech company, where he rose to become a Senior Director of Engineering and Head of Infrastructure. His expertise in managing large-scale, high-availability systems was crucial in supporting Robinhood's rapid growth.

Before joining OpenAI in July 2025, Ruddarraju served as Head of Infrastructure Engineering at xAI, Elon Musk's AI venture, starting in June 2024. This progression through leading technology firms, culminating in his CTO Compute role at OpenAI in July 2026, underscores his recognized ability to tackle the most demanding infrastructure challenges in the tech industry.

The Importance of Compute for OpenAI’s Future

Ruddarraju has emphasized that the computing capacity will be a defining factor in the advancement and widespread adoption of AI. His mandate at OpenAI involves not just expanding existing data centers but also innovating across several fronts:

  • Distributed Systems: Designing and implementing robust, scalable systems to manage vast computing resources.
  • Hardware Manufacturing: Engaging with the development and procurement of specialized AI hardware, including custom chips.
  • Data Center Construction: Overseeing the strategic planning and build-out of new, energy-efficient data centers.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Collaborating with external infrastructure partners to augment OpenAI's capabilities.

In recent public statements, Ruddarraju has articulated OpenAI's intention to integrate commercial strategy more closely with engineering decisions. This approach aims to ensure that the infrastructure roadmap directly supports the development of frontier models like GPT-5.6 and beyond, enabling new breakthroughs in AI research and application.

The challenge, as Ruddarraju sees it, extends beyond merely adding more servers. It's about creating a responsive and adaptable computing environment that can continuously meet the escalating demands of AI research and the innovative applications that emerge from it, ensuring OpenAI remains at the forefront of artificial intelligence development.
