West Bengal Joins Ayushman Bharat, Unlocking ₹1,000 Cr & Cashless Care for 6 Crore

· · 3 min read

West Bengal has officially joined the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), extending cashless treatment access to nearly six crore residents. This integration is set to bring approximately ₹1,000 crore in annual central funding to the state's healthcare system, boosting hospital utilization.

West Bengal has officially integrated into the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), making it the 36th state or Union Territory to implement the central government's flagship health insurance scheme. This significant move is poised to provide cashless hospital treatment to an estimated six crore people across approximately 1.43 crore families in the state.

Significant Central Funding Boosts Healthcare

The state's entry into PM-JAY is projected to inject nearly ₹1,000 crore in annual central funding into West Bengal's healthcare infrastructure. Sunil Kumar Barnwal, CEO of the National Health Authority (NHA), confirmed that the Government of India would provide substantial financial support, strengthening financial protection for beneficiaries and encouraging greater use of both public and private healthcare facilities.

Nationally, PM-JAY has facilitated over 12 crore hospital admissions, amounting to more than ₹1.82 lakh crore since its launch in 2018. The program has generated over 44 crore Ayushman cards and currently covers more than 62 crore people, including vulnerable families, senior citizens aged 70 and above, and gig workers. This expansion has contributed to a notable decline in India's out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure, dropping from 64.6% before 2018 to 43.4% currently.

Enhanced Access and Portability for Beneficiaries

For West Bengal residents, a key benefit of PM-JAY is its portability feature, which enables migrant workers and their families to access cashless treatment at empanelled hospitals nationwide. Beneficiaries will gain access to PM-JAY's extensive network of over 36,000 empanelled hospitals, ensuring treatment without upfront payments.

Dr. Alok Roy, Chairman of Kolkata-based Citadel Health, highlighted the broader implications of this integration. "The integration of West Bengal into Ayushman Bharat is expected to do more than extend insurance coverage. It brings the state into a nationwide digital healthcare network where patient records, eligibility and treatment claims can be accessed across empanelled hospitals," Dr. Roy stated. He also noted that the portability feature would be especially crucial for migrant workers and those seeking treatment outside their home districts or states, potentially drawing more patients into the formal healthcare system by reducing financial barriers.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari confirmed that approximately 1.24 crore eligible families would directly benefit, with the total beneficiary base rising to 1.43 crore families once senior citizens and frontline health workers are included. This integration complements West Bengal's ongoing preventive healthcare initiatives, such as the recently launched HPV vaccination program for 14-year-old girls.

With West Bengal's inclusion, the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme is now operational across all states and Union Territories, marking a significant milestone in India's journey towards universal health coverage.
