KOLKATA – Industry leaders and trade associations in West Bengal have enthusiastically welcomed the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) projected victory in the 2026 Assembly Elections, anticipating a significant boost to industrial growth and economic potential across the state. As election trends indicated a clear mandate for the BJP, securing 35 seats and leading in 170 others out of 294, business associations quickly voiced their hopes for a new dawn of investment and reforms.
Renewed Optimism for Industrial Development
Naresh Pachisia, President of the Bharat Chamber of Commerce, articulated the widespread sentiment, stating that a 'new dawn' is on the horizon for Bengal. He emphasized the state's aspirations for substantial investments and accelerated business development, coupled with a renewed focus on Centre-State relations. Pachisia highlighted the critical need for transparent governance, progressive business policies, stable labor relations, and immediate actions to enhance Bengal's image among potential investors.
“Restoring investor confidence within a short timeframe will be crucial in reviving West Bengal’s legacy as a leading industrial hub,” Pachisia commented, envisioning the state's resurgence as a dynamic 'entrepreneurial super-highway'. He also advocated for diversified resource mobilization, including leveraging central government schemes and international assistance, alongside strengthening governance to prevent revenue leakages.
Priorities: Infrastructure, IT, and Ease of Doing Business
The Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCC&I) congratulated the BJP on its overwhelming mandate, expressing eagerness for an environment that fosters investor confidence, improves the ease of doing business, stimulates industrial development, and generates employment. The chamber stressed the importance of policy stability for sustained growth.
BCC&I looks forward to an environment that further strengthens investor confidence, ease of doing business, industrial development, employment generation, and policy stability in the state.
The BCC&I outlined several key priorities for the incoming government, including the development of world-class infrastructure, the establishment of 'plug-and-play' ecosystems for global capability centers, future-ready skilling initiatives, and a robust industrial and IT policy framework. They also called for stronger institutional cooperation between government and industry, alongside fiscal flexibility and performance-linked incentives to catalyze new investments.
Support for the Textile Sector
Meanwhile, Sudesh Agarwal, President of the West Bengal Hosiery Association, voiced the textile industry's expectations. He expressed hope that the new administration would provide special support to the sector, aligning with central government schemes. Agarwal highlighted the need for stronger Centre-State coordination to effectively implement schemes, develop modern textile parks, improve logistics, and create integrated value chains.
Agarwal believes that given the evolving global geopolitical landscape and shifting supply chains, West Bengal possesses significant potential to become a competitive and reliable textile hub. This potential, he noted, hinges on policy intent being matched by timely and effective execution.
