Vaiko: Vijay's TVK 'Force to Reckon With' in Tamil Nadu 2026 Elections as Exit Polls Hint Strong Debut

· · 2 min read

MDMK chief Vaiko called actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) a 'force to reckon with' in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Exit polls suggest TVK could secure 10-24 seats, signaling a notable debut.

Actor Vijay's political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is emerging as a significant contender in the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, with early exit poll projections hinting at a strong debut. MDMK chief Vaiko, an ally of the ruling DMK, remarked that TVK would be a "force to reckon with" and could deliver unexpected results.

Vaiko highlighted the potential for a swing among students and first-time voters towards TVK, underscoring the growing public interest in the actor-turned-politician's entry into the electoral arena. The 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly went to polls on April 23, with vote counting scheduled for May 4.

Varied Exit Poll Projections for Tamil Nadu 2026

While most exit polls predict the incumbent DMK-led alliance, headed by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, will retain power, the margin of victory is expected to be narrower than in 2021. Projections from P-Marq and Matrize indicate the DMK+ alliance securing 122-132 seats, with the AIADMK-led alliance potentially winning 87-100 seats. TVK, in these surveys, is projected to bag around 10-12 seats.

Peoples Pulse offered a more optimistic outlook for the DMK+, forecasting 125-145 seats, and suggested TVK could secure a more substantial 18-24 seats. However, not all polls align; JVC predicted a potential comeback for the AIADMK, projecting 128-147 seats for the party and its allies.

The most divergent forecast came from Axis My India, which estimated a striking 98-120 seats for TVK. If realized, such a performance would dramatically transform the election into a highly competitive three-way contest, reshaping Tamil Nadu's traditionally bipolar political landscape.

Vaiko Cautions Against Hasty Conclusions

Acknowledging the wide disparities across different exit polls, Vaiko urged caution against drawing firm conclusions before the official results. "Exit polls don't follow a single trend. Some say DMK will form the government, another favours AIADMK, and one even suggests TVK could come to power. We have to wait and see," he stated.

Despite the electoral shifts, Vaiko emphasized the enduring strength of the Dravidian movement in Tamil Nadu politics. He asserted that the movement, built on years of struggle and sacrifice, would remain a permanent force in the state and that its foundations could not be shaken by parties like the BJP.

As the state awaits the final vote count, analysts agree that TVK's entry has undoubtedly introduced a new dynamic, altering vote shares and adding an unpredictable element to the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
