US Envoy Hints at Easing Kashmir Travel Advisory; Cites Improved Security

· · 2 min read

US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, indicated a potential re-evaluation of the Level 4 'Do Not Travel' advisory for Jammu and Kashmir. His remarks follow a visit to the region, acknowledging improved security measures.

Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir – United States Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, has signaled that Washington may soon downgrade its stringent Level 4 "Do Not Travel" advisory for Jammu and Kashmir. During a landmark visit to Srinagar, Gor acknowledged significant improvements in security and safety within the region, paving the way for a potential policy shift that could boost international tourism.

Re-evaluating Travel Warnings

Speaking to reporters after high-level meetings, including with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Ambassador Gor stated that the US State Department periodically reassesses its global travel advisories. "The United States puts out travel warnings and every so often we re-evaluate those travel warnings," Gor said. While making no immediate announcements, he confirmed, "it is something that we are going to look at."

The current Level 4 advisory, the highest risk warning, excludes eastern Ladakh and Leh but cites concerns over terrorism and violent civil unrest in other parts of Jammu and Kashmir. This advisory has long impacted the region's vital tourism-dependent economy.

Acknowledging Security Enhancements

Gor credited both the central and local governments for their efforts to enhance safety. "New Delhi, the chief minister here (J&K), and the government here, we believe, have made some incredible steps to keep this area safer and make it more secure," he remarked. He added, "This is a beautiful area. I think a lot of Americans would enjoy coming here and seeing the beauty and opportunity that exists here."

His visit marks the first standalone trip by a US envoy to the region in six years and carries considerable geopolitical significance. Gor reiterated India's territorial sovereignty, calling Jammu and Kashmir "an important part of India."

Local Appeals and Economic Impact

The diplomatic movement follows consistent appeals from local leaders. Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had previously urged the US envoy to reconsider the advisory, highlighting its detrimental impact on thousands of families reliant on tourism.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, while focusing on bilateral cooperation rather than airing grievances during his discussions with Gor, emphasized exploring "possibilities that exist to widen and deepen the engagement between J&K and the United States of America, particularly in areas like tourism, horticulture and the new economy."

While a formal announcement is pending, Ambassador Gor's explicit indications suggest a significant turning point that could revive international tourist footfall and reinforce global confidence in Kashmir's increasingly stable environment.
