· · 2 min read

US Ambassador Sergio Gor announced that a bilateral trade deal between the United States and India is expected to be finalized within weeks or months. Speaking in Delhi, Gor highlighted the ongoing negotiations aiming to expand market access and strengthen supply chains for both nations.

NEW DELHI – The United States and India are on the cusp of finalizing a significant bilateral trade agreement, with US Ambassador Sergio Gor indicating that a deal could be concluded “in the coming weeks and months.” Ambassador Gor shared his optimism during the Annual Leadership Summit of the American Chamber of Commerce in Delhi, emphasizing the advanced stage of negotiations.

Progress Towards a Landmark Agreement

Ambassador Gor underscored the rapid pace of the current discussions, noting that while negotiations have spanned a year and a half, the timeframe is considerably shorter than the nearly two decades it took for the European Union to finalize its trade agreement with India. “We are confident that in the coming weeks and months, this trade deal will be finalized,” Gor stated, highlighting the commitment from both sides.

Objectives of the Trade Deal

The proposed agreement aims to significantly enhance economic ties between the two countries. Gor articulated the commercial ambition behind the talks, referencing a previous administration's goal to foster bilateral trade for mutual prosperity. He detailed the expected outcomes:

  • Expanded market access for businesses.
  • Reduction of existing trade barriers.
  • Greater certainty for investors and enterprises.
  • Strengthening of global supply chains.
  • Catalyzation of new investments.
  • Driving sustained and inclusive economic growth.

These benefits are anticipated to positively impact industries, workers, and economies in both the US and India.

Diplomatic Momentum and Upcoming Visits

The diplomatic calendar reflects the urgency to finalize the deal. An Indian delegation recently visited Washington, D.C., to work through intricate details of the interim arrangement. Following this, a US delegation is scheduled to travel to India next month for further technical discussions. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed the upcoming US visit and echoed Ambassador Gor's positive outlook on the timeline. Goyal also clarified that the chief US trade negotiator would not accompany Secretary of State Marco Rubio during his upcoming four-day official visit to India, but confirmed separate plans for their arrival next month.

Overcoming Hurdles

The path to this agreement has not been without its challenges. An interim trade arrangement framework was established in a joint statement on February 7. However, a subsequent US Supreme Court ruling struck down all reciprocal tariffs, which had previously served as a primary leverage point for Washington in global trade negotiations. Despite this, both nations have continued to push forward, demonstrating a strong resolve to secure the bilateral agreement.
