The Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, has announced a significant 25% salary increase for employees working in the state-run Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) liquor outlets. This move marks the first pay revision for TASMAC staff in two decades, addressing long-standing concerns regarding employee welfare and operational practices.
Combating Overcharging and Corruption
The primary objective behind this substantial pay hike is to curb corruption and prevent the prevalent practice of overcharging customers. For years, complaints have surfaced about TASMAC outlets charging an additional ₹10 per liquor bottle beyond the prescribed price. Minister of Prohibition and Excise, K. Vignesh, stated that the salary increase is expected to eliminate the need for employees to resort to such practices, thereby improving accountability across TASMAC shops.
The government believes that providing better wages will directly lead to a reduction in illicit collections and foster a more transparent selling environment. Details regarding the implementation of the revised pay structure are anticipated soon.
Part of Broader TASMAC Reforms
This salary revision is the latest in a series of reforms initiated by the Vijay government to streamline the functioning and enhance the social impact of state-run liquor outlets. Earlier measures included a directive from Chief Minister Vijay to close 717 TASMAC shops. These outlets were identified as operating within 500 meters of sensitive locations such as places of worship (276 shops), educational institutions (186 shops), and bus stands (255 shops).
The closure of these shops, out of Tamil Nadu's total of 4,765 TASMAC outlets, was framed as a social reform aimed at limiting easy access to alcohol in vulnerable public spaces. This decision garnered widespread political support, with actor-politician Kamal Haasan welcoming the move and urging further closures. Congress MP Manickam Tagore also endorsed the decision, citing it as a response to public demand and a step towards improving safety for women, students, and the general public.
Looking Ahead
The government's dual approach of increasing employee wages and strategically closing outlets reflects a comprehensive strategy to reform the state's liquor sales system. These measures aim not only to improve the working conditions of TASMAC employees but also to address societal concerns related to alcohol accessibility and corruption within the retail chain.
