India's Deep-Tech Startups Face "Valley of Death" in Commercialization Push

Indian deep-tech startups are struggling to cross the "valley of death," moving from prototypes to commercial products. Inadequate testing, patient capital scarcity, and supply chain issues threaten their survival and ability to scale.

India's burgeoning deep-tech startup ecosystem faces a critical challenge: transitioning from promising prototypes to commercially viable products. While the nation has demonstrated its capability to develop complex technologies, many ventures are now encountering a "valley of death" as they attempt to scale, hampered by inadequate infrastructure, funding gaps, and supply chain issues.

Overcoming Testing and Certification Hurdles

A significant barrier for deep-tech companies is the lengthy and resource-intensive process of testing and certification. Saurav Jha, founder and CEO of D-Propulse, highlighted the urgent need to accelerate these stages. He argued that government support should extend beyond initial grants to active early procurement, positioning the government as an anchor customer willing to place intermittent orders and back "spiral development" even if products don't meet all final requirements immediately.

Jha also stressed the necessity of funding dedicated infrastructure, such as precision machining and specialized test facilities. Without these, startups often face months-long waits for access to national facilities, stalling development precisely when capital demands are escalating.

Building a Business Beyond Technology

Beyond technical development, deep-tech startups must master the art of building a sustainable business. Srinath Ravichandran, co-founder and CEO of Agnikul Cosmos, emphasized that companies can no longer solely focus on engineering solutions; they must concurrently solve business problems. He noted that Indian startups cannot simply replicate global models, like those of SpaceX, due to unique domestic ecosystem constraints.

Ravichandran pointed to challenges in supply chain structuring, the economics of scaling, and effectively translating R&D into manufacturing and commercial returns. Ignoring the business aspect risks relegating innovative technologies to mere "hobby parts," he warned.

Innovative Funding Approaches

While external capital is crucial, some founders advocate for greater self-reliance. Agnishwar Jayaprakash, founder and CEO of Garuda Aerospace, suggested that deep-tech founders should strive to be less dependent on external funding. Garuda Aerospace, for instance, has adopted a customer-funded approach, developing and testing products in India before expanding them into international markets.

Forging a Deeper Ecosystem

The divergent perspectives underscore the evolving landscape of India's deep-tech journey. The country has successfully cultivated talent and technological prowess in areas like rocketry, propulsion systems, and advanced drones. However, for these innovations to truly thrive, India requires a more integrated and supportive ecosystem capable of guiding technologies through rigorous testing, certification, manufacturing, and ultimately, into the hands of paying customers. The survival and success of these startups hinge on overcoming these multifaceted challenges.
