Airlines Seek Urgent Government Intervention Amid Fund Delays
The Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA), representing major carriers like Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet, has formally appealed to the Civil Aviation Ministry for immediate intervention. The federation highlights a severe liquidity crunch faced by its members due to the delayed release of sanctioned funds under the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) 5.0.
In a letter addressed to Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, the FIA stated that many airlines, despite being sanctioned credit under ECLGS 5.0, have only received a partial amount, with lending institutions holding back the remaining crucial funds. The federation is seeking "appropriate guidance and reassurance" for participating banks to expedite the release of these balance amounts, starting with the first tranche.
Mounting Financial Pressures Strain Airline Operations
The Indian airline industry is contending with "unprecedented financial and operational challenges," according to the FIA. These pressures stem from a confluence of factors, including the ongoing conflict in West Asia since April 2026, which has led to airspace restrictions and flight diversions. Additionally, a depreciating rupee, escalating operating costs, and a sharp increase in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices have severely impacted airline liquidity and working capital.
The federation emphasized that while not all its members require ECLGS 5.0 credit, those that have applied are in urgent need of these funds to meet critical operational and working-capital requirements. This timely support is deemed essential to sustain their operations and maintain vital air connectivity across the nation.
Understanding the ECLGS 5.0 Scheme
ECLGS 5.0 is a government-backed credit program initially approved in 2026. Its primary objective is to provide additional liquidity to businesses, including scheduled passenger airlines, that have been adversely affected by disruptions linked to the West Asia crisis. Under the scheme, banks and other participating lenders disburse the loans, while the National Credit Guarantee Trustee Company (NCGTC) provides a government-backed guarantee cover, aiming to de-risk lenders.
Crucial for National Connectivity and Economic Growth
The FIA underscored that the financial and operational sustainability of Indian airlines is vital not only for the aviation sector itself but also for the broader economy. Airlines play a critical role in national connectivity, trade, tourism, and employment. The federation highlighted that for every person directly employed in aviation, an estimated 6.10 additional individuals are employed in ancillary and allied businesses.
Timely government support to safeguard the financial viability of airlines seeking assistance is therefore crucial for protecting the wider aviation ecosystem and contributing to the government's vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
