DU Allows Direct PhD Entry for High-Achieving 4-Year Undergraduates

· · 2 min read

Delhi University announced direct PhD entry for its four-year undergraduate program graduates, effective for the 2026-27 academic session. Students completing the FYUP in 2026 with a minimum 7.5 CGPA can bypass a master's degree, streamlining their research path.

Delhi University Streamlines PhD Pathway

Delhi University (DU) has introduced a direct pathway for high-achieving graduates of its Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) to pursue doctoral studies without needing a master's degree. This significant policy change, effective for the 2026-27 academic session, allows eligible students to transition straight into PhD programs from August 21, 2026.

The move aligns with national higher education reform goals, particularly the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aiming to integrate Indian academic structures with global standards. The FYUP framework itself was initiated in the 2022-23 academic year, with its inaugural batch set to complete their studies in 2026.

Eligibility and Policy Details

Under the new guidelines, students who complete the FYUP in 2026 with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 7.5 or higher are eligible to apply directly for PhD programs. A slightly lower CGPA of 7.0 is set for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates. This direct entry is being implemented as a special measure for the upcoming academic session.

To facilitate this transition, Ordinance VI of the University’s Ordinances has been formally amended following approvals from both the Academic Council and the Executive Council. This amendment underscores DU's commitment to offering streamlined research opportunities for its top undergraduate scholars.

The Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) Context

When the FYUP was launched, 75,948 students enrolled in the 2022-23 academic year. By the end of the third year in 2025, 40,005 students opted to exit with a traditional three-year degree, while a substantial 35,943 students chose to continue into the optional fourth year.

The fourth year of the FYUP is specifically designed to foster research aptitude, entrepreneurship, and hands-on skill development. Students in this track are encouraged to tackle real-world problems through research, skill-based courses, internships, and community outreach, supported by initiatives like Skill Development Centres established in 25 colleges.

Impact on Postgraduate Education

While DU had previously offered a one-year postgraduate program across 46 disciplines to accommodate the demand from four-year undergraduates, this new direct PhD pathway removes the necessity for a master's degree entirely for qualifying students. The university stated that for FYUP graduates, a master's program is not essential, reinforcing the comprehensive nature of the four-year undergraduate curriculum.
