The Tamil Nadu government has significantly increased maternity leave for its female employees, extending the benefit to 365 days for a third child. This new policy brings the leave duration for a third child in line with the existing provision for the first two children, which also stands at one year.
New Policy Details and Implementation
Previously, women government employees with two or more surviving children were eligible for only 12 weeks of maternity leave. The recent announcement, made by Human Resources Management Minister D Sarathkumar in the Assembly, rectifies this disparity, emphasizing the state's commitment to social welfare and women's empowerment. A detailed government order is expected to be issued soon to formalize the implementation of this new entitlement.
Evolution of Maternity Leave in Tamil Nadu
Maternity leave provisions in Tamil Nadu have seen incremental increases over the years. What began as 90 days of leave was extended to six months in 2011. Further expansions occurred in 2016, raising the period to nine months, and then to one year in July 2021. These progressive changes, enacted by successive state governments, underscore a long-term focus on supporting working mothers within the state's public sector.
Human Resources Management Minister D Sarathkumar stated, "The Tamil Nadu government is a welfare-oriented administration prioritising social welfare and women's empowerment."
The move comes amidst ongoing discussions about work-life balance for parents, highlighted by recent events such as a first-time TVK MLA bringing her newborn to the Assembly session. The extended leave is expected to provide substantial relief and support to female government employees expanding their families.
