Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay officially launched the 'Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam', or Maternal Uncle Gold Ring Scheme, on September 28, 2026. This welfare initiative aims to support families and encourage institutional deliveries by providing a one-gram, 22-carat gold ring to eligible newborns delivered at government hospitals.
Scheme Details and Eligibility
Under the 'Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram' scheme, each qualifying newborn will receive a gold ring with a unique serial number, packaged to prevent tampering. The Tamil Nadu government has allocated an annual budget of ₹755.83 crore for this significant program, reflecting its commitment to family welfare.
To be eligible for the scheme, several criteria must be met:
- The baby must be born in a Tamil Nadu government hospital or another state-run healthcare institution.
- The mother must be a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu.
- Beneficiaries must be registered under the Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation (PICME) system and possess a valid Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) identification number.
- The scheme is inclusive and applies to newborns irrespective of their birth order.
Notably, the benefit will be available retrospectively for babies born from June 22, 2026, which is CM Vijay’s birthday. This means families whose children were delivered in government hospitals from that date can also claim the gold ring.
Implementation and Distribution
For babies born between June 22, 2026, and the formal launch date, the gold rings will be distributed through 107 designated centers across Tamil Nadu. These hubs are equipped to provide rings to approximately 100 children per day during the initial phase.
From September 28, 2026, onwards, eligible babies are expected to receive their gold ring at the time of discharge from the government hospital. The Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation is responsible for procuring and supplying the rings to the designated hospitals as per government requirements. The first phase of the scheme reportedly includes the distribution of 1.28 lakh rings.
The 'Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram' scheme draws inspiration from the traditional Tamil custom of 'Thaimaaman Seer', where a maternal uncle presents gifts to a newborn, symbolizing familial support and celebration.
