TRAI Mandates 30-Day Recharge Plans for Indian Prepaid Mobile Users

· · 2 min read

India's telecom regulator, TRAI, has mandated new 30-day recharge plans for prepaid mobile users, addressing long-standing consumer concerns. This change reduces the need for frequent recharges and offers more flexible options, including voice and SMS-only plans.

TRAI Mandates New 30-Day Recharge Plans

Indian prepaid mobile users are set to benefit from new regulations introduced by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), mandating the provision of 30-day recharge plans. This significant move addresses a long-standing consumer grievance regarding the prevalent 28-day validity cycles offered by telecom operators.

Consumer Advocate Raghav Chadha Hails Decision

Raghav Chadha, a prominent political figure, lauded the new rules, calling them "good news" for millions of prepaid subscribers across the country. He highlighted that the introduction of 30-day plans would effectively reduce the number of annual recharges from thirteen to twelve, providing significant relief and cost savings to consumers.

Key Provisions of the New Regulations

  • 30-Day Validity: Telecom operators are now required to offer Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs) with a validity of at least 30 days for voice, SMS, and data services.
  • Monthly Renewal: At least one STV must be available for renewal on the same date each month. If that specific date does not exist in a particular month, the renewal date will automatically move to the last day of that month.
  • Voice and SMS-Only Options: The new framework also ensures the availability of plans specifically for voice and SMS services, catering to users who do not require bundled data.
  • Longer Validity Options: Operators must also offer at least one STV with a validity period longer than the standard monthly-renewable option.

Chadha's Earlier Advocacy for Consumer Choice

Chadha revealed that many consumers had previously shared their concerns with him regarding limited and inflexible recharge options. He had raised this critical issue in Parliament on March 11, questioning the logic behind 28-day validity periods being marketed as monthly plans, which compelled users into an extra annual recharge cycle.

Expressing gratitude to the Government of India and TRAI, Chadha stated that these new regulations resolve those concerns, promoting greater consumer choice and convenience in the Indian telecom sector.
