In a major push for public welfare, the Tamil Nadu government has announced a substantial increase in health insurance coverage and an expansion of maternity leave benefits for its employees. Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay confirmed the enhancements, emphasizing healthcare as a fundamental right rather than a privilege.
Health Insurance Cover Soars to ₹25 Lakh
The Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) will now offer a five-fold increase in coverage, raising the maximum sum insured from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh. This significant expansion aims to improve access to quality medical treatment for citizens across the state, regardless of their income or location. The initiative is part of Tamil Nadu's broader strategy to bolster its healthcare services and medical infrastructure.
Maternity Leave Extended for Third Child
Further enhancing social welfare, the state government has also extended maternity leave for women government employees having a third child. These employees will now be entitled to 365 days of maternity leave, bringing it in line with the benefits provided for the first two children.
Minister for Human Resources Management, D Sarathkumar, announced this change in the state Assembly, stating, "As the Tamil Nadu government is a welfare-oriented administration prioritizing social welfare and women's empowerment, the maternity leave currently provided for the third child of female government employees will be enhanced from 12 weeks to 365 days."
Evolution of Maternity Leave Policy
The state's maternity leave policy has seen several improvements over the years. Initially set at 90 days, it was increased to six months in 2011, then to nine months in 2016, and finally to one year (365 days) in July 2021 by successive state governments. The latest announcement ensures consistent support for families with three children, reflecting the government's commitment to women's empowerment and family well-being.
These measures underscore Tamil Nadu's dedication to removing barriers to healthcare and supporting its workforce, aiming for a more equitable and robust social support system.
