Banks, Insurance, IT, Realty Sectors Poised for High Returns Post-Q1 Earnings

· · 2 min read

Following the June-quarter earnings season, financial expert Sharad Awasthi highlights banks, insurance, IT, and real estate as top sectors for potential high returns. He cites valuation comfort and improving execution visibility as key drivers in a dynamic market.

Mumbai, India – As the first-quarter earnings season concludes, a notable shift in market sentiment is emerging, with specific sectors identified as prime candidates for significant returns. Sharad Awasthi, Head of Research, Private Client Group at SMIFS Securities, points to banks, insurance, information technology (IT), and real estate as compelling investment opportunities.

According to Awasthi, the current market, despite broader index pressures, presents fresh opportunities driven by valuation comfort and enhanced execution visibility. This perspective suggests investors should look beyond headline index weakness and focus on stock selection backed by solid earnings.

Banks Lead Strong Earnings Performance

The banking sector, particularly the broader BFSI (Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance) segment, demonstrated robust performance in Q1. Awasthi noted strong advances growth and improving operational trends across the board. Within private lenders, HDFC Bank was highlighted for its high valuation comfort and expected continued improvement in numbers. Axis Bank also re-entered the radar after a correction, with its current valuation offering an attractive entry point.

Insurance Offers Value, IT a Contrarian Play

Beyond traditional lending, the insurance sector is seen as a broad-based value play. Awasthi indicated that insurance stocks present a decent bet at current valuations, appealing to investors seeking pricing comfort after a period of muted enthusiasm rather than pure momentum plays.

The IT sector, however, is framed as a contrarian opportunity. Despite not being an immediate earnings trade, healthy deal wins suggest a rerating could occur over the next two to three quarters as order-book strength translates into earnings upgrades.

Real Estate Moves into Focus

A particularly sharp call from Awasthi's Q1 assessment is the real estate sector, which his team is actively exploring. The argument for real estate rests on strong pipeline visibility and attractive valuations. Many listed developers are showing significantly higher gross development value (GDV) compared to their historical execution base, indicating a strong medium-term revenue runway.

Broader Market Message: Earnings Resilience

The overarching message from Awasthi's analysis is that earnings resilience is increasingly outweighing macro anxieties. He also flagged a strong capital expenditure cycle and the potential for urban consumption revival as supportive trends for the coming quarters. For investors, Q1 becomes less about chasing momentum and more about identifying sectors where strong earnings, robust balance sheets, and attractive valuations align.
