Delhi Master Plan 2047: Canals & Drains Proposed for Solar & Hydro Power Generation

· · 2 min read

Delhi's proposed Master Plan 2047 outlines an innovative strategy to expand renewable energy by utilizing existing canals and drains for solar and hydro power. The DDA-approved plan also suggests combining agricultural activities with solar farms and greening transport hubs.

Delhi’s upcoming Master Plan for 2047 (MPD-2047) introduces a groundbreaking approach to bolster the national capital’s renewable energy capacity. The plan proposes leveraging the city's extensive network of canals and drains for both solar and hydro power generation, aiming to transform existing infrastructure into new sources of clean electricity.

Innovative Energy Generation from Waterways

The Master Plan of Delhi 2047, recently approved by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and now awaiting final approval from the Central government, emphasizes greater use of current infrastructure and available land. This strategy is central to Delhi’s clean-energy transition, seeking to reduce the city’s reliance on conventional power sources.

According to the draft MPD-2047, a key proposal involves assessing the feasibility of Delhi’s numerous canals and drains for energy generation. “Delhi has a number of canals and drains that can be utilised for harnessing solar and hydro energy as per feasibility. The concerned agencies are to leverage this potential for generation of energy as per feasibility,” the document states.

Beyond Canals: Agriculture-Solar Farms and Green Transport

The ambitious plan extends beyond waterways, introducing an 'agriculture-cum-solar farm scheme' for greenfield areas. This initiative aims to combine agricultural activities with solar power generation, allowing land to serve dual purposes and maximize resource efficiency.

Furthermore, the MPD-2047 recommends that Delhi’s bus depots and metro stations transition to meeting their electricity needs through renewable energy sources. This push aligns with a broader governmental drive to increase solar generation, spearheaded by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s 'green budget' and dedicated allocations for supporting infrastructure development.

A Framework for Sustainable Urban Development

Integrating renewable energy directly into Delhi’s long-term urban development strategy, the MPD-2047 tasks relevant agencies with identifying and utilizing viable sites based on technical and economic feasibility. If approved, this plan could provide Delhi with a robust framework to expand clean-energy generation without solely depending on traditional large-scale solar projects, weaving renewable power directly into the city’s transport and urban fabric for a more sustainable future.
