The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav a two-week extension to deposit ₹5 crore in connection with seven cheque dishonour cases. The court termed this a “last opportunity” for the actor, setting a new deadline of October 5 for compliance.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V Mohana was hearing Yadav’s plea challenging his conviction and a three-month jail sentence previously ordered by the Delhi High Court. The Supreme Court had initially protected him from surrendering, contingent on the ₹5 crore deposit with the Court Registry.
During the recent hearing, Senior Advocate PS Patwalia, representing Yadav, requested additional time, stating that the actor currently lacked the funds but intended to secure them. Counsel informed the court that Yadav planned to sell some of his own property, and his mother also owned immovable property that could be sold to raise the required amount. “Kindly grant him some breathing time,” the counsel pleaded, promising a concrete proposal, including an initial draft of at least ₹2 crore.
Chief Justice Surya Kant expressed skepticism regarding Yadav's conduct, remarking, “He is an actor in Bollywood. We hope he is not acting here also.” The Chief Justice further noted that Yadav’s past actions did not inspire confidence in the court.
While extending his interim protection from surrender until October 5, the court directed Yadav to submit his passport immediately. The matter, titled Rajpal Naurang Yadav and another v. M/s Murli Projects Pvt Ltd, SLP(Crl) 16923/2026, is scheduled for further hearing on the new deadline.
