Sunil Mittal Targets 10-Year Airtel Succession Plan, Aims for 51% Promoter Stake

· · 2 min read

Bharti Airtel Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal announced his intention to transition leadership to the next generation within a decade. He also aims to restore Bharti Telecom's controlling ownership in Airtel to over 50% during this period.

Sunil Bharti Mittal, the chairman and managing director of Bharti Airtel, has outlined a strategic vision for the company's future leadership, indicating his desire to hand over the reins to the next generation within the next 10 years. Mittal, who was recently reappointed to his chairman role for five years until September 2031, shared these aspirations during a recent company conference call.

Mittal's Vision for Airtel's Future Leadership

During the concall, Mittal articulated a clear roadmap for succession, expressing a personal wish to see the leadership transition unfold over the coming decade. This move underscores a long-term strategic approach to ensure continuity and stability for one of India's leading telecommunications giants.

Restoring Promoter Ownership

Alongside the succession plan, Mittal emphasized a core belief in maintaining a strong, unified controlling promoter shareholder. He stated his aspiration for Bharti Telecom, the founding promoter, to regain a controlling stake of 51% or just over 50% in Airtel. Historically, Bharti Telecom held this level of ownership for an extended period. Mittal acknowledged that achieving this target for a company of Airtel's scale represents a significant undertaking, requiring an additional 10% stake increase from current levels.

Recent Financial Performance

The announcement of Mittal's succession and ownership goals coincided with Bharti Airtel's release of its Q4 earnings for the March 2026 quarter. The company reported a net profit of Rs 9,247.4 crore, marking a 26% decline from the previous year's Rs 12,475.8 crore. Despite the profit dip, revenue saw a healthy 16% increase to Rs 55,383 crore, driven by robust performance across India and Africa operations.

  • Consolidated EBITDA grew by 0.6% year-on-year to Rs 32,038 crore.
  • EBITDA margin improved by 0.6% to 57.8%.
  • India mobile revenue increased by 8.3%, supported by higher realizations and an expanding customer base.
  • Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) rose to Rs 257 from Rs 245 in the corresponding quarter last year.

The board also recommended a final dividend of Rs 24 per fully paid-up equity share.

The Road Ahead for Bharti Airtel

Mittal's long-term vision encompasses both a generational shift in leadership and a strengthening of the core promoter's control. These strategic directives aim to position Bharti Airtel for sustained growth and stability as it navigates the evolving telecommunications landscape, ensuring a clear path forward under future leadership.
