India's Inflation Nears 6% in Oct-Nov, SBI Research Warns of Temporary Spike

· · 2 min read

India's retail inflation is projected to temporarily breach 6% in October and November 2026, driven by rising food prices, according to SBI Research. Despite the spike, core inflation remains contained, and the RBI is expected to hold interest rates steady.

India is bracing for a temporary but significant uptick in its retail inflation, with SBI Research forecasting that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) could exceed 6% during October and November 2026. This warning follows a rise in July's inflation figures, primarily fueled by escalating food costs.

Anticipated Inflation Surge and Subsequent Easing

The latest analysis from SBI Research indicates that India's August inflation print is expected to reach 4.7%. Looking ahead, the report projects that inflation could just breach the 6% threshold in the autumn months before moderating to approximately 5% in the fourth quarter of FY27. This suggests that while a short-term increase is likely, a sustained inflationary trend is not anticipated.

The current inflationary pressure comes after India's CPI inflation hit a 19-month high of 4.45% in July 2026, up from 4.38% in June. Rural inflation notably outpaced urban inflation, registering 4.84% compared to 3.96%.

Food Prices Drive the Increase

The primary catalyst behind the projected rise in India's inflation is food prices. Food inflation surged to 5.52% in July, with specific commodities like onions, ginger, and garlic contributing significantly to the upward pressure. This domestic increase occurred even as global food inflation showed signs of easing.

Despite the headline numbers, underlying price pressures appear relatively contained. Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and fuel components, marginally declined by 5 basis points to 3.85% in July. Similarly, core CPI excluding gold stood at 3.44%, and imported inflation moderated from 8.1% in June to 7.3% in July, indicating that broader economic forces might not be driving a persistent inflationary spiral.

Implications for Monetary Policy and Households

The SBI Research outlook carries important implications for India's monetary policy. The report anticipates that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will likely maintain the repo rate at 5.25% throughout FY27. This assessment suggests that the central bank may choose to look past a short-lived increase in headline inflation, provided that core price pressures remain moderate.

For households, a temporary period with inflation above 6% could mean renewed pressure on everyday expenses, particularly food. However, the report's projection of a subsequent moderation in the final quarter of FY27 offers some relief, suggesting that the strain on household budgets could gradually ease. For borrowers and investors, the stable interest rate outlook implies less volatility in lending costs.

“SBI’s broader assessment, therefore, is not one of persistently high inflation but of a temporary acceleration followed by moderation,” the report stated, emphasizing the transient nature of the anticipated spike.
