Sun TV Network Dismisses IPL Demerger Report; Shares Climb 7% Amid Speculation

· · 2 min read

Sun TV Network has officially denied media reports suggesting a demerger of its sports division, which includes its Indian Premier League (IPL) business. Following the clarification, the broadcaster's shares jumped over 7% on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, amid market speculation.

Sun TV Denies IPL Business Demerger Rumors

Sun TV Network has issued a strong denial regarding recent media reports that suggested a possible demerger of its lucrative sports division, which encompasses its highly successful Indian Premier League (IPL) business. In an official clarification filed with the stock exchanges on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, the broadcaster explicitly labeled the reports as "a rumour" and stated it could not comment on market speculation.

The speculation originated from a news report by CNBC-TV18 and its Hindi counterpart, CNBC Awaaz, which discussed a potential separation of Sun TV's sports assets. Sun TV Network’s company secretary and compliance officer, R. Ravi, confirmed that the company had made all necessary disclosures as per SEBI regulations and that there was no impending material price-sensitive information to affect trading volumes or share prices.

Shares Surge Amid Valuation Buzz

Despite, or perhaps because of, the denial, Sun TV Network shares saw a significant boost. The company's stock jumped by 7.73% to ₹596 apiece on September 30, 2026, after hitting an intraday high of ₹605. This surge came as investors focused on the substantial underlying value of its cricket franchises, which had been highlighted by the demerger talks.

Sun TV Network owns the popular IPL team SunRisers Hyderabad, along with SunRisers Eastern Cape in South Africa’s SA20 league and SunRisers Leeds Ltd. in the UK’s The Hundred competition. These assets contribute significantly to the company's overall valuation and revenue streams.

Financial Context and Future Outlook

The company currently boasts a market capitalisation of approximately ₹24,000 crore, with an estimated free-cash position of around ₹8,000 crore. A brokerage report cited in the original media coverage valued the IPL franchise alone at an impressive ₹13,000 crore to ₹14,000 crore. Furthermore, IPL-related revenue contributed an estimated 33% of Sun TV’s first-quarter revenue, according to the CNBC report.

While the market reacted positively to the perceived value of these assets, Sun TV’s official stance remains clear: there are no confirmed plans to separate its sports business. The exchange filing did not provide any details regarding board discussions, transaction structures, or timelines related to a possible demerger, reinforcing the company's position that the reports were purely speculative.
