Indian Equities Slide: Sensex, Nifty Erase Intraday Gains Amid Profit Booking

· · 3 min read

Indian equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty extended declines, failing to hold intraday gains on Wednesday. The Sensex closed at 72,480.29, down 0.07%, while the Nifty50 fell 0.42% to 22,620.45, pressured by profit booking and elevated crude oil prices.

Indian equity markets experienced a volatile trading session on Wednesday, with key indices Sensex and Nifty failing to sustain early intraday gains. The benchmarks ultimately closed lower, extending a corrective trend driven by profit booking, rising crude oil prices, and broader global macroeconomic concerns.

The 30-share BSE Sensex concluded the day at 72,480.29, marking a decline of 48.78 points or 0.07%. Similarly, the NSE Nifty50 index shed 95.75 points, or 0.42%, to settle at 22,620.45. Despite the overall downturn, selective gains in banking and IT sector stocks provided some limited support, preventing a steeper fall.

Factors Driving the Decline

Market volatility marked Wednesday's trading session, ultimately pushing indices lower and prolonging a corrective trend. After a largely flat opening, both Sensex and Nifty initially attempted a recovery, with Sensex climbing over 500 points and Nifty surpassing 22,800. However, these gains proved fleeting as selling pressure re-emerged in the afternoon.

Persistent global macroeconomic concerns contributed to a fragile market sentiment. Brent crude oil prices remained elevated around $103 a barrel, even after a slight moderation from recent peaks. Concurrently, the US 10-year Treasury yield stayed near its recent highs, having reached 5.293% in the prior session. Continued selling by foreign investors added to the market's woes, alongside the rupee trading near the Rs 96 per dollar mark.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, noted that the brief relief rally lost momentum due to profit booking at elevated levels, exacerbated by a rebound in oil prices. He added that elevated global bond yields persist as a significant concern, restricting the potential for sustained risk-taking.

Sectoral Performance and Investor Outlook

Conversely, large-cap stocks, particularly within the banking and IT sectors, saw some investor interest. This shift reflected a preference for relatively attractive valuations and a higher margin of safety amidst the prevailing macroeconomic uncertainties. The broader market, however, remained largely unchanged, with both midcap and smallcap indices posting marginal gains.

Investors are closely monitoring the trajectory of crude oil prices, bond yields, inflation expectations, and their potential implications for global monetary policy. Consequently, market participants are expected to remain selective, favoring fundamentally strong businesses with resilient earnings profiles until greater clarity emerges regarding the macroeconomic outlook.

Nifty Outlook and Key Levels

Nandish Shah, Deputy Vice-President at HDFC Securities, highlighted that short-term indicators suggest deeply oversold conditions, with the Nifty50 positioned near the crucial 22,600 support zone, which corresponds with its 200-week moving average (WMA).

“While oversold conditions increase the likelihood of a technical bounce, it remains prudent to wait for the index to sustain above higher levels rather than fight the prevailing downtrend,” Shah advised.

Immediate resistance for the Nifty is identified at 22,810, followed by the 23,000–23,100 range. A definitive breach of this upper band would be necessary to indicate a significant recovery. Conversely, a sustained drop below the recent swing low of 22,569 could see the index fall further towards 22,200.
