Starbucks is setting up its inaugural Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Chennai, India, projected to generate 800 technology jobs. This hub will manage the company's global tech and financial operations, offering salaries up to ₹35 lakh annually.

Global coffee giant Starbucks has announced the establishment of its first-ever Global Capability Centre (GCC) in India, choosing Chennai, Tamil Nadu, as the strategic location. This significant investment is expected to create approximately 800 high-paying technology jobs, bolstering Chennai's position as a hub for global capability and technology operations.

New Hub for Global Technology & Financial Operations

The new Chennai facility will serve as a critical technology hub for Starbucks' worldwide operations. It is designed to centralize the company's global technology and financial functions, operating independently of Starbucks' retail joint venture partner in India, Tata Consumer Products.

Sources indicate that technology professionals employed at the centre could command salaries of up to ₹35 lakh per annum, reflecting the high-skill nature of the roles being created.

Strategic Investment in Tamil Nadu

An official Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of the GCC was signed on Monday, September 21, 2026, during an event at the Secretariat. The agreement involved Guidance, the investment promotion agency of the Tamil Nadu government, and Starbucks. Chief Minister Thiru S. Joseph Vijay was present at the signing, underscoring the state's support for the venture.

The Starbucks GCC will be situated at Taramani's Ramanujan IT Park, with the company having already secured space for the facility. This move marks a substantial commitment from Starbucks to leverage India's skilled workforce and technological infrastructure for its global business needs.

Impact on Chennai's Tech Landscape

The addition of 800 new technology jobs and the establishment of a major global capability centre by a prominent international brand like Starbucks are anticipated to further enhance Chennai's reputation as a preferred destination for multinational corporations seeking to expand their tech and operational footprint in India. This investment is poised to attract further talent and foster innovation within the region.
