· · 2 min read

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has announced significant changes for the CGL 2026 recruitment, affecting over 20 lakh applicants vying for 12,256 Group B and C posts. Key reforms include a new Tier-II paper, sectional timing in Tier-I, and mandatory live photo capture.

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has introduced a series of significant structural, technical, and exam-pattern changes for the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) 2026 recruitment process. These reforms will impact over 20 lakh expected applicants competing for approximately 12,256 vacancies across Group B and Group C posts.

The official notification for SSC CGL 2026 was released on May 21, with applications open until June 22, 2026. Aspirants should be aware of several key updates that will shape this year's examination.

Key Changes in SSC CGL 2026 Recruitment

New Paper-III in Tier-II

A notable addition is Paper-III in Tier-II, specifically for candidates applying for Assistant Accounts Officer (AAO) and Assistant Audit Officer posts. This new paper will cover General Studies, focusing on Finance and Economics. Previously, Tier-II consisted only of Paper-I and Paper-II.

Sectional Timing Introduced in Tier-I

For the first time, the Tier-I examination will feature sectional timing. Candidates will be allotted 15 minutes for each of the four sections: Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and English. The system will automatically advance to the next section once the time limit for the current section expires, demanding greater time management skills from candidates.

Mandatory Live Photo Capture

Applicants are now required to capture a live photograph during the registration process. This replaces the previous method of uploading pre-existing passport photos, ensuring real-time verification and aiming to curb impersonation.

AAO Posts Divided into Central and State Cadre

Assistant Audit Officer posts have been bifurcated into Central Cadre and State Cadre categories. Some State Cadre positions may necessitate proof of local language proficiency, typically verifiable through Class 10 certificates.

More Detailed Pay-Level Classification

The SSC has provided a more granular classification for Pay Level-8 posts, offering clearer departmental and cadre-wise listings. This enhanced transparency aims to provide candidates with a better understanding of the roles and career paths available.

Impact on Aspirants

While Tier-I marks will continue not to contribute to the final merit list, the ultimate selection will primarily hinge on Tier-II performance. Experts suggest that these new changes will not only assess a candidate's knowledge base but also their speed, adaptability, and ability to strategize effectively under exam pressure.
