Bollywood actor Richa Chadha marked Onam this year with a significant and compassionate gesture, donating a life-size mechanical elephant to the Gurupuram Sree Maha Vishnu Temple in Kerala. Accompanied by her daughter, Zuneyra, Chadha attended the festivities on August 26, 2026, presenting the temple with 'Gurupuram Arjunan' as a humane alternative to using live elephants in traditional rituals.
The mechanical elephant, standing three meters tall and weighing 500 kilograms, is designed to mimic the realistic movements of a real elephant, including ear-swishing, trunk-lifting, and even water-spraying. This innovative creation allows the temple to uphold its cultural traditions while ensuring the welfare of animals.
A Celebration of Tradition and Compassion
Dressed in a traditional white-and-gold sari, Richa Chadha joined her daughter, who wore a specially designed Onam outfit, for the unveiling ceremony. The mother-daughter duo participated in the celebrations, which featured traditional cultural performances such as Chenda Melam and Thiruvathira dance. They also shared an Onam Sadhya meal with local devotees, immersing themselves in the community's festive spirit.
Speaking about the occasion, Chadha expressed the profound meaning of celebrating Onam with her daughter. "It was a very special feeling to be here in person and celebrate Onam in such a beautiful and culturally rich setting. To be there with my daughter made it even more special," she remarked. She emphasized the importance of passing on traditions while also embracing more compassionate practices.

Chadha highlighted the rationale behind her gift, advocating for the protection of real elephants. "Elephants are such magnificent and intelligent beings, these large mammals are highly social. She further noted that technology can play a crucial role in adapting traditions to be more humane. "Our festivals and traditions are such an integral part of who we are.
