Skyroot Aerospace Sends First Lab-Grown Diamond Jewel into Space Aboard Vikram-1

Skyroot Aerospace, in collaboration with Cosmos Diamonds, launched the 'Cosmos Bloom Diamond,' a 16.9-carat lab-grown jewel, into orbit on its Vikram-1 rocket. This marks a global first for a lab-grown diamond in space, highlighting Indian innovation.

India Achieves Global First with Lab-Grown Diamond in Orbit

In a groundbreaking achievement for both the global space and jewelry industries, Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace has successfully deployed the world's first lab-grown diamond jewel payload into orbit. The 'Cosmos Bloom Diamond' was launched aboard Skyroot's Vikram-1 rocket, India's inaugural privately developed orbital launch vehicle, capable of placing 350 kg into Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

This pioneering mission was a collaboration with Indian lab-grown diamond brand Cosmos Diamonds. The unique payload was among six carried by the Vikram-1, showcasing a convergence of Indian space technology, advanced manufacturing, and cultural artistry.

The Cosmos Bloom Diamond: A Jewel of Indian Craftsmanship

The 'Cosmos Bloom Diamond' is a meticulously handcrafted gold piece set with 16.9 carats of lab-grown diamonds, all cultivated and crafted within India. Its design, inspired by the lotus, India's national flower, symbolizes the nation's rich cultural heritage, scientific ambition, and technological innovation.

The concept for sending a diamond into space originated from a conversation between Pawan Kumar Chandana, Co-founder and CEO of Skyroot Aerospace, and Sanjana, Founder of Cosmos Diamonds. Inspired by the nursery rhyme "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," their initial idea evolved into a year-long engineering and design project focused on creating a space-ready jewel.

"The project was never just about sending a diamond into space. It became a celebration of what Indian innovation can achieve when technology, design, and culture come together. Skyroot is shaping India's future in space, while we believe lab-grown diamonds represent the future of jewellery," said Sanjana, Founder of Cosmos Diamonds.

Engineering a Space-Ready Jewel

To ensure its survival during the intense conditions of launch and orbital flight, the 'Cosmos Bloom Diamond' underwent extensive development. This included over 100 design sketches and 11 production iterations. Working closely with Skyroot's engineers, Cosmos Diamonds tested various metals and structural materials.

The final design integrates lab-grown diamonds with precision-crafted gold, custom aluminum components, and miniature gold replicas of rocket screws that secured the lotus-shaped structure. The payload received all necessary technical clearances from both Skyroot Aerospace and IN-SPACe, the government's space sector regulator.

Vikram-1 Mission: More Than Just Diamonds

The 'Cosmos Bloom Diamond' was one of six payloads successfully deployed by the Vikram-1 rocket. Other notable payloads included SCOPE, Skyroot's Earth observation satellite; SOLARAS, a CubeSat for solar activity studies; Embrace, an orbital robotic arm demonstration for space debris capture; and two technology demonstration payloads from Germany-based DCubed.

Another unique payload, Micro-Art, featured an 18-karat gold micro-sculpture bearing microscopic portraits of Indian space pioneers Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and Sir C.V. Raman. A highlight of the mission was when onboard cameras captured the first rays of sunlight illuminating the 'Cosmos Bloom Diamond' against the vast backdrop of space, a truly defining moment.

Showcasing India's Innovation Ecosystem

This collaboration underscores the burgeoning intersection of India's private space industry and its advanced manufacturing capabilities. While Skyroot Aerospace continues to expand India's commercial launch services, Cosmos Diamonds is positioning lab-grown diamonds as a technology-driven, ethically produced alternative in the luxury jewelry market.

The mission serves as a high-profile demonstration of how innovation across diverse sectors—from aerospace engineering and materials science to jewelry design—can converge to achieve globally significant milestones, further cementing India's reputation for cutting-edge advancements.
