Dubai Cafe Alleges AI Photo Used for Fake Spilled Drink Refund Claim

· · 2 min read

A Dubai cafe, Taho Avenue, alleges a customer used an AI-generated photo to claim a refund for spilled boba drinks. The cafe noted discrepancies in packaging details, prompting calls for stronger delivery platform safeguards.

A café in Dubai has raised an alarm after it alleged a customer submitted an AI-generated photograph to claim a refund for a food delivery. Taho Avenue, located in Al Muraqqabat, Deira, highlighted the incident to draw attention to potential fraudulent refund claims impacting small food businesses.

According to the café, the customer’s complaint included a photograph depicting spilled drinks, overturned cups, and a takeaway bag covered in a sticky mess. However, upon review, Taho Avenue identified several inconsistencies between the submitted image and its actual product packaging.

Packaging Discrepancies Raise Suspicions

The café pointed out that while the customer ordered boba, the photograph appeared to show sago instead. Furthermore, the writing on the cup sleeves in the image did not match Taho Avenue’s branding, and the cups and lids themselves differed from those the business uses for its deliveries.

Taho Avenue also questioned the feasibility of such a spill given its packaging methods. "We secure our cups with adhesive tape, so how can this happen?" the café stated, emphasizing its robust packing process designed to prevent spills during transit.

Financial Strain on Small Businesses

The cafe stressed that fraudulent refund claims add significant financial pressure to small food businesses heavily reliant on delivery platforms. "Delivery platforms already take 32–45 per cent of our sales in commissions and charges. Refund deductions leave us with almost nothing, while salaries, rent, food costs, and other expenses customers don't see still need to be paid," Taho Avenue explained.

While acknowledging the importance of addressing genuine complaints, the café urged customers to be honest when reporting issues and appealed to delivery platforms like Talabat to enhance safeguards against deceptive claims.

Delivery Platform Responds

Taho Avenue confirmed that it shared the incident to raise awareness and deter similar behavior. The café also reported that Talabat, one of the food delivery platforms, has since reached out to address their concerns and work towards a resolution.
