Siddaramaiah Resigns as Karnataka CM; Future Role in Rajya Sabha or National Politics Eyed

· · 2 min read

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah resigned on Thursday, clearing the path for Deputy CM DK Shivakumar. The veteran leader, who served over eight years, is now being considered for a Rajya Sabha seat or a national OBC leadership role within the Congress party.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has officially stepped down from his post, paving the way for Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to assume the top leadership role in the state. The resignation, which came after weeks of intense speculation regarding a leadership change, was announced on Thursday following a breakfast meeting with his cabinet colleagues in Bengaluru.

A Legacy of Service and Transition

Siddaramaiah, a seasoned political figure, served as Chief Minister for a total of 8 years and 12 days, making him the longest-serving CM in Karnataka after D. Devaraj Urs. His tenure saw significant political developments, and his departure marks a pivotal moment for the Congress party in the southern state. At a joint press conference with DK Shivakumar, Siddaramaiah emphasized that the transition was being managed in a coordinated manner, stating, “I will do as the high command says,” signaling his acceptance of the party leadership's future directives.

What Lies Ahead for Siddaramaiah?

For the 77-year-old veteran leader, several significant roles are reportedly being considered by the Congress high command:

Rajya Sabha Berth

  • Reports suggest the party has offered Siddaramaiah a seat in the Rajya Sabha. Given the Congress party's likely comfortable win of three out of four Rajya Sabha seats in Karnataka, this presents a strong possibility for his continued parliamentary involvement.

National OBC Leadership Role

  • The Congress leadership reportedly sees Siddaramaiah as one of its strongest OBC (Other Backward Classes) faces at the national level. This move aligns with Rahul Gandhi's broader focus on caste census, social justice, and OBC politics ahead of the 2029 general elections, positioning Siddaramaiah for a more prominent national role.

Continued Influence in Karnataka

  • Despite resigning as Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah is widely expected to maintain a substantial influence over the state Cabinet and party affairs in Karnataka. His long-standing experience and political acumen will likely continue to shape regional policy and strategy.

AHINDA Outreach

  • Siddaramaiah is anticipated to continue leading and strengthening his core support base, the AHINDA grouping (Minorities, Backward Classes, and Dalits). This will involve state-level conventions and public rallies aimed at consolidating the party's regional voter base and ensuring its continued strength in Karnataka.

The transition underscores a strategic move by the Congress party to manage leadership changes while leveraging its senior leaders' experience at both state and national levels.
